    Head issues

    Thanx Ed and William.
This weekend I have replaced all the remaining helicoil threads from my head.

Tim, I did not drill through.

I dont think it will loosen again.

Tried to upload some pics, but this time it wouldent work.

    Bart

The thread repair went ok, but:

Nice is not the Word I would use for the under side of my HF head. Here is two pics from when I lifted it of.

Clearly solified coolant seeping from cracks in the combustion Chambers.
Its a lot of work fixing this.

I am determined to make my HF head good again.
    Any one experienced this?

I doubt whether the cracks are actually in the head, or that you only had cracks in the gasket (I had both). Let's hope for the latter!

Give it a good clean first and pressure test it to be sure.

I need to check, but isn't the 1.3HF head the same as for the other S1 1.3 (not the 1.3S) engines? In that case, may be worth just changing the head with a good one.

    Re: Fulvia 1,3 HF

The 1300HF head is a completely different beast. Casting is the same 818.140 but valves are larger (same as 1300S) ports are way bigger and polished to a mirror finish from the factory. Furthermore they are numbered. When I was so lucky as to find a NOS 1300Hf head in a box labeled 'berlina' on an auto jumble in Italy somewere in 2001 for the price of 250.000lit (200eur) I decided to skip rebuilding my 1200Hf head which was in a poor state. I consider it a nice upgrade.
The 1200HF head is exactly the same as the 1300 ralley head. The only detail to tell them apart is the manufacturing date. 1200HF heads are all made in '66. 1300 ralley head manufacturing started in '67.

    cheers,

    William

    Hi Impaw
Here are some pics from my HF 1,3 head. I have sent my head to proffessionals to get old valve seats out today, so I cant check the location. If memory serves me rigth the date of Production is on the inlet side to the left for the carb rubber. Type ID on the exhaust side. Its also other markings on the pics.

You are perfectly rigth. It is big valves and a very Nice porting job done at the factory. Nothing is needed other than a 3 or 5 angle valve seat job. I want to retain my original head. It belongs to my engine and cars history.

    Bart
If I find a good one, it would probably not be a 1,3 HF head. You still have to do a lot of work, New guides and valve seats + +. Here is some pics of the cracks after cleaning up. I have done the pressure test allready. #3 had a leak from the cooling cap.Click image for larger version.
