Steering shaft length adjustment, Horn problem

In the course of diagnosing my horn ring not activating said horn, I discovered that the steering shaft protrudes out of the column too far. Auto cancel indicator function is misaligned, horn contact from wheel to column doesn't touch. It is all off by a little less than a 1/4". I can barely even see the steering box with the brake booster in the way. I think I can see "flexible coupling" which looks like a couple pieces of thick canvas.

Passing light flash button inoperable. PO put auxiliary momentary button on the dash for lights at some point. Don't know if relevant.
Is there adjustment for the effective length of the steering shaft? I see references to shims in the manual. Do I have to unbolt the booster to get at it?
What does this flexible coupling look like? I get the feeling someone made their own out of a handy piece of canvas.

It's a flat disc, about 1/2" thick, with a central hole and 4 holes at the quadrants -- two for the steering shaft yoke, and the other two for the steering box connection. The originals are layered canvas interleaved with metal reinforcing. Reinforced rubbers ones are available. Mercedes used them in the '60s; I bought one from my local Merc dealer's parts counter (it had to be ordered from the mother ship).

Is your car S2? If so it does not have the canvas coupling. On S2 The top section of the shaft before the first under dash universal joint is held in a tube with a ball bearing cup each side held in tension by the spring between the lower ball bearing and uj coupling. If this not assembled correctly the shaft will travel up and also there will be a lot of floppy play at the steering wheel. Just a thought....

Sadly, it seems they are no longer available from Mercedes (I tried to get one a year ago).

The light colored ones that are sometimes available on Ebay seem to be crap: they aren't reinforced, and disintegrate after a while.

    This car is an S1.
Do I have to pull the brake assembly to get at the coupling?
Is there any other shim adjustment I need to look for while in there?

Access is difficult, but with some effort you can get at the steering disc without having to remove anything from the brake system

Upon further review, it's possible there are 2 couplings in there. It's hard to tell. It's white fabric and looks like 2 layers of it. Might be about the difference up top. I don't think I can get my hands in there. I think I'll have to do without the horn until I pull the subframe. Next time I have it in the air I'll see if there is more access from below. Steering box appears to be leaking. No surprise there.

Co-incidentally I'm trying to get the very same thing apart this weekend (the s1 steering rag joint) in order to drop the engine and subframe. I've disconnected just about everything else bar this because access is so tight. I'm going to give it another go, but can't think of a better way to separate the steering system to get the engine out. If I figure it out I'll post an update.
