Giselle, from Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, is Finished!

After about 225 hours of logged restoration work, this 1976 Lancia Scorpion, screen-used in the 1977 Disney film Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, is finished! It's been a pretty pleasant restoration over all, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. She turned out great, and I hate to have to send her back to her owner in Texas soon. Anyway, the pictures speak for themselves. Pictured with her in some shots is a Vw Beetle which also was screen-used in the same film. Let me know what you think!

    Early on in the restoration:

    And the final product:

And a comparison with a screenshot from the movie for those who aren't as familiar:

Just curious, I seem to recall the headlights doing some strange flip-around act in the film (not like stock Scorpion popups at all); did you manage to recreate that functionality in your restoration, and if so how, or are those blanked-out headlight areas only made to "look the part"?

That looks great. Was this car the one in the desert in Ca ? My old scorpion was in the same hanger. I did not want to pay extra at the time for the Herbie car. Plus I always wanted silver. I have to watch the dvd now!

Dave, it's probably the car you speak of. It had a pretty worn metallic blue paint job.

SubGothius, basically yes, the blank off plates just look the part. The headlight buckets do obviously pop up and down via the stock configuration. It is uncertain how Disney rigged them to lift up higher, but at any rate the owner said that it had enough provenance to not require that extra touch. Though I will say that there were three holes still present in each headlight bucket with remnants of old rivets still stuck in them. After careful measurements, I managed to use the exact same holes to attach the new blank-off plates, also using rivots. Just a nice little touch!

Thanks for the compliments! Will, I would LOVE to add one of these sexy cars to my garage. Being around this mostly stock one gets me itching to take one and really let it breathe with some performance carburation and exhaust. I've got a lot on my plate for now, but I'll always be on the lookout for the right car. I could always sell my Jetta and get a Scorp for my daily driver, who needs a 4 seater car anyway?
