Where is the body number on a South African S2 Coupe

I have moved this to a new thread, as you can see it's not on the drivers side (RHD) upper subframe mounting and from the previous thread it's not in the water channel at the back of the bonnet (hood)

The subframe chassis reference is usually a blue factory stamped plate not any stamping on the subframe itself.

The S2 Handbook shows the following for the coupe:

So there should be more than just the plate.

On my series 1 2c Berlina, there is actually a plate with this on riveted to the top of the subframe, near the Subframe tower and horns.
Although I have no knowledge of series 2 Berlinas.

Subframes, gearboxes and rear axles all have riveted plates with type and serial numbers. The engine type & serial is stamped into the rear flange. But other than possibly by extraordinary chance, no two serial numbers will match either each other or the chassis number. The only numbers that match (or there's a problem) are the body stamp and the chassis plate.

    Maybe this will help.
Stamped in the bonnet channel opposite the air intake.

Photo off my SA built car - chassis 11 built at the Daihatsu plant.

    Ed,
Not knowing exactly how Daihatsu actually built
Fulvia's in their plant, I'm only assuming the level of CKD, and unless we know different why would we assume a built up chassis from Italy?
Did they mean completely knocked down as the name implies, or send chassis's in sub assembly form, which in my experience with General Motors wasn't the norm, as its easier to ship components in bulk.
Most Countries preferred to have the work for themselves, and in what would have been a sophisticated assembly plant such as Daihatsu would have had the capacity to do so.
Even In some African Countries, where we shipped basic transport vehicles in CKD form back in the 1970s made up their own chassis, but suspension and running gear was already built up.
Daihatsu would no doubt have received a build allocation from Lancia of the models they were required to build with accessory codes, and the build allocation would include the chassis numbers allocated to these vehicles.

maybe Steve (jolly500) can elaborate whether or not there is a lancia chassis number in addition to the daihatsu chassis number? now i'm curious where (or if) the SA cars were accounted for in the lancia production numbers. nothing more than idle curiosity...

I think it's very unlikely that Diahatsu did their own panel stamping. If they did not do so, the question boils down to this: was the 'CKD' in the form of built-up shells (per Tav. 68 / 68A / 68B), or separate stampings for inner structure (per Tav. 69 / 69A / 69B) and outer body (per Tav. 70 / 70A / 70B).

I tend to think they received shells, given that Lancia's goal was not to 'offload' production, but merely to legally comply with SA's "local content" requirements. SA of course would have preferred to localize as much of the production as possible, but by the same token Lancia would have preferred to retain production in-house and supply components as close to final assembly as legally possible.

Even though we're speaking of events from a half century ago, there surely must still be some SA lancisti who can definitely answer this question.

Just managed to upload the chassis number location on Fulvia.
Looking in from the front of the Fulvia this shows it in the drain channel in front of the windscreen,
