Point of clarification on handbrake renovations

Firstly: apologies to our resident experts for whom this will be a tiresome subject. The problem is that I’ve done lots of reading, but have been left with mixed messages.

My rear calipers on my '72 1,600 are off while I await the new seal kits. While they are off, I thought this a good time to have a look inside the barely-functioning handbrake drums. My question is whether I do, or do not, need to undo the hub with the special tool in order to access the inside of the handbrake drums.

Any brilliant tips for “must-do” procedures (or “mustn’t-do”) greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

You will have to remove the hub. Some pics of how I did it can be found here (need to scroll down a bit)

Some serious equipment recommended to do it safely. BTW the impact nut was made out of a 2" standard nut.

I would try to adjust the shoes with the knurled brass nut viewed at the bottom of the drum thro the (2) holes in the drum. flick it with a medium size flat blade screw driver clockwise to expand and anti clockwise to reduce. If this does not work you need to undoe the drun axle nut with a special tool.

I thought I had access to the hub tool and would take advantage of the calipers being off to do a proper job, but I fear the tool is the six-pointer, not the three. Thus I’ll follow your advice and do a full strip-down some other time. Don’t want to miss out on summer driving!
