    You can wash these standard (non-oil bath) air filters perfectly in petrol, if there is no other damage that calls to replace them; the (dry) air filters are obviously not intended to be greased afterwards. Only, I don't know if it is worth the trouble: you need quite a big canister of petrol to get them in, and they aren't really that expensive to make it worth going trough the trouble.

    i usually back blow them with compressed air. be careful not to blow a hole in them, and be careful not to introduce dirt to the inside only to be sucked into the intake. this only works on loose debris, and eventually the filter needs to be tossed and replaced.
