    Alternator not charging battery

    Quick question

My alternator was not charging the battery although fan belt doesn't slip. Before investigating the alternator in more detail, I have swapped over the two black cables on the smaller (8mm nut terminals) to see if that is the issue. Previously I ran a 1216 engine with a dynamo so wasn't sure which cable went where.

So my question, is will this sort the problem? or is it likely an alternator issue?

    Cheers
    Simon

You may damage (or already damage) the alternator by swopping leads. Follow the wirng from to the regulator. It it a ducellier or bosch alternator or a modern one....

So my guess is one lead is the alternator light and the other fat red one is charging. Have you measured volts across battery when eng8ne runnig?

    Re: Alternator not charging battery

There are three terminals. Big fat one where the red cable goes, and two 8mm nut ones. Two black cables, a thin black one, and a thicker black one. I will check where the come from and the wiring diagram. There might be some helpful signs on the alternator itself to show which terminal does what

    Re: Alternator not charging battery

We did make a quick comparison measuring the battery with engine running and not, and there was no difference

My sense it that I have wired it wrong and damaged the alternator. Or, perhaps it just didnt work anyway.

a Delco Remy alternator may not be new
rebuilt Delco Remy alternators are often used (by Lucas) to replace Bosch ones
I do use one (45 Amps) for my Fulvia S2

make sure yours has not an intégrated regulator as mine
if so, you do not need to (or must not ?) use the old regulator
the rubber mounting of the alternator does not give a good ground (or even no ground at all), so you must add a ground wire from alternator (to engine for instance)

    P.S. :
the bulb of alternator warning light (dashboard pannel) must be good as it is used as an "excitator" (not sure this is the right word in english) for the alternator

here after a modified alternator wiring picture (for my alternator with intégrated regulator)
