    Wow, talk about missing the point! Barry’s comment was about Lancia strengthening the block for Group A rally use by adding structure to it given the homologation restrictions. The whole point of the integrale was 100% to win the World Rally Championship, the whole reason it existed was purely a marketing one...!

    As an only slightly related question - did the factory race cars have to keep the balancers in place and functioning? Was that part of the homologation rules?

    Balancers has to be in place but not functional.

    The rules weren’t always strictly adhered to (Toyota springs to mind). Some of the Abarth Group A engines had slightly further apart cylinder centres (improved cooling) according to someone who should know, which I imagine squeezed the balancer belt out, not to mention the different block, head, crank, cams et all that were required ! :-)
