I almost made a version of the factory tool, which makes it safe and simple (but only works with the subframe dropped). And if I did it on a regular basis, I surely would. But with two massive C clamps at each end, we had redundancy built in, and only +/- half the load on each clamp.

I made something similar to the factory tool. Cost about £30 in bits and pieces. A length of SHS off ebay and some threaded bar. Even that was stressed to it's absolute limit. Photos are at the following thread:

I had a 5' length of 1" x 3" structural steel channel and a source for industrial hoist shackles with threaded rods – likely a lot stronger than the factory tool. But as I say, it seemed like more work than necessary for a one-time job.

I removed the drive shafts and used a bottle jack placed on the subframe and jacked up the spring.

Thanks to all for the suggestions! I thought replacing the leaf spring bushings and mounts would be easy...it appears that is not so!

An additional question: Are the tools required to remove the axle nuts different front and rear? And if so, do you need the tools to remove the brake discs (I would assume so)?

Could I chip in a question about the hub tools? I have what looks like a factory tool (nicely made, plated, with an integral handle) with 3 castellations, what is this one for? It looks like at least some of the nuts have 6 castellations? Seems like there are different tools for the hub nut, and the bearing holder, at the rear, too?
Sorry I bet this question has been asked a million times!
