    Thanks yes. I'll try that one day. I actually have a correct NOS thermostat so can't loose much if I try to carefully remove threaded part like you described.

    When I got my fulvia the thermostat was also fused to manifold. Sadly previous owner removed the centre part completely so I had 0 thermostat. In the end I Used a renault 5 thermostat that fits nice...

    You actually need to be looking at cams to know if you are at 1 or 4 firing stroke when crank is at tdc. Or you can just do it with trial and error :)

    I might have missed something in the text but the timing mark should be on the flywheel which you can check through an opening at back of engine. There is no timing mark on front pulley.

    That bearing is a tricky one not easily available I actually reused mine. Mine for certain did not have the tight tolerance of a new one ,but it "FELT" and "looked"(no rust , races smooth) good...

    You could try and measure/set valve clearance between cam follower and cam and not valve and screw/rod.

    It is very hard to see the indentation especially on lower down exhaust valves :) I set mine...

    Using a feeler gauge on this valve will always end up in VERY loose setting.

    There are probably better explanations out there but my personal method is

    1) remove plug leads
    2) remove valve cover.

    For Each Valve:
    3) using a 24mm spanner rotate engine so that cam lobe...

    at 6000rpm the distributor rotor is turning at 3000rpm

    For a dwell of 60 degrees ( degrees of rotation that coil is energized) the points only has 3.33ms to charge coil for each spark

    Another item that is high on the list of regular checks is the radiator coolant level.

    Fulvia's don't have an expansion bottle like modern vehicles so coolant level drops are normal.

    I might be answering my own question but it seems that people are ditching the shims and simply using a 3M product 468MP that i can easily get in sheet form on the back of pads with some copper slip?...
