View Full Version : Power Window to Manual Conversion
Betazag

My power windows are getting really weak...I am expecting to see smoke coming out of the motors any time now. I was thinking about converting the power windows to manual. The windows work great with the emergency crank. I was thinking about modifying a pair of emergency cranks so they will fit flush to the door panels (they would look corny if I didn't shorten them some), then I would just mount them permanantly. Does anyone out there have any spare cranks they want to sell? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. MR

Mark, my first Beta was a 1300 coupe' with manual windows. I later upgraded to power windows by getting the internal bits from a broken 2l car. If I were doing this mod, I'd try to get hold of the proper kit for the manual windows as the glass will then go all the way down.

I dunno if you can de-motor the electric winders and then get one of the SPAL universal kits on there, but I put them on the manual windows on my scorpion and they are great. They mount underneath, inside the door as well, no ugly "box" or any of that. I have four or so Scorpion handles which may or may not fit the e-winder "hub", I don't remember what that hub looks like for sure.

The power windows will work fine so long as the connections are clean.
Check fuses for corrosion. Ditto the switches.
Today I am fitting relays to the door lifters of my Esprit. Thus the switches only carry the current for the relays.
I have fitted an extra fuse box connected directly to the battery and 25A cables for power and earth direct to the doors. Will provide instructions if there is interest.
I did some measurements and under load the voltage at the motors was 9.5V. Voltage drops at all those connections and switches add up.
The relay conversion will work with Beta too. Although my VX windows work fine.
A repair I did on the VX lifters was to swap the lifter rack end for end so that the worn bit at the bottom was now at the top where is doesn't come in contact with the motor. Prise apart, swap around and spot weld.
Update:
The relays work well. The windows are twice as fast, even with the engine off. :D
