View Full Version : HF Turbo Power / Torque Curve

Hi Everyone,

I HAVE OWNED A 1991 LANCIA DELTA HF TURBO IE (LHD) FOR AROUND TWO YEARS. BROUGHT IT IN A RIGHT STATE AND HAD IT FULLY RESTORED - MUST BE ONE OF THE CLEANEST AND HEALTHIEST ONES AROUND! NO EXPENSE SPARED AT ALL!

I HAD A FULL ROLLING ROAD TUNE ON THE CAR BACK IN JUNE (HAVING 146,000 km ON THE CLOCK) AND THE CAR WAS PRODUCING 121 BHP AND 133 LB/FT OF TORQUE AT THE WHEELS. THE CAR ALSO HAD A 180BHP CHIP INSTALLED, MADE BY SUPERCHIPS. THE GUY ABORTED THE TUNE AS THE COMPRESSION WAS TOO LOW ON EXHAUST VALVES 2 AND 3 AND RECOMMENDED A FULL TOP-END REBUILD WHICH I HAD DONE A WEEK LATER.

I HAD ANOTHER ROLLING ROAD TUNE TWO WEEKS AGO - NEW VALVES / GUIDES - YOU NAME IT, IT WAS REPLACED DURING THE REBUILD. THIS TIME ON THE ROLLING ROAD, THE CAR SCORED 128 BHP AND 137 LB/FT OF TORQUE - A PRETTY POOR INCREASE IF YOU ASK ME CONSIDERING ALL OF THE WORK INVOLVED.

THE CAR HAS SENSIBLE MODIFICATIONS, K&N AIR FILTER, UPRATED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, BLEED VALVE AND A SUPPOSEDLY 180 BHP CHIP - ANOTHER I PURCHASED WHICH WAS MADE BY SOME GERMAN COMPANY (AFTER I WAS TOLD THAT MY FIRST CHIP COULD HAVE DESTROYED MY ENGINE!)

I UNDERSTAND THAT FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS (LIKE TORQUE AND POWER) ARE MEASURED FROM THE FLYWHEEL, AND POWER IS LOST UPON THE TRANSFER TO THE WHEELS, BUT 128 BHP AND 137 LB/FT DOES SEEM A LITTLE LOW TO ME!

DOES ANYBODY ELSE THINK THIS SEEMS UNUSUALLY LOW, OR IS IT JUST ME! IT ISN'T THE FASTEST CAR IN THE WORLD I KNOW - I HAVE OWNED A 1301CC, AND 1600 IE AND NOW THIS ONE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE TURBO SPINS UP FINE, ALTHOUGH ON FULL BOOST THE PRESSURE SWITCH CUTS IN AND TRYS TO SLOW THE ENGINE DOWN - THIS ALSO MAKES ME THINK IT COULD EITHER BE A VERY CHEAP CHIPSET, OR JUST A STANDARD ONE WITH A DIFFERENT NAME ON IT! (I DON'T KNOW WHAT MAKE IT IS BY THE WAY!) DOES ANYBODY RECOMMEND A PARTICULAR BRAND OF CHIP TO PUT IN THIS CAR - I KNOW BOB BRAIN DEVELOPMENTS MAKE ONE FOR IT AT £350, BUT ARE THERE ANY OTHERS?

WITH REFERENCE TO THE ABOVE MESSAGE I POSTED ON HERE EARLIER, THE MAKE OF MY CURRENT HF TURBO CHIP IS "CHIPTUNING" IN GERMANY!

Back to basics

Are you sure the engine is ok?
What compression readings do you have?
What turbo?
How much boost?
Other engine mods?
What wheels and tyres?
Are you following all the required "mods" to get 180BHP?

You have approximatly 150BHP assuming 15% loss

Hi There,

I am pretty sure my engine is OK, it doesn't smoke, doesn't burn any oil, always been properly serviced and even have a ring binder full or receipts for absolutely everything.

OK, the compression readings I did have before the rebuild were as follows:

Cylinder 1 - 155 psi
Cylinder 2 - 125 psi
Cylinder 3 - 115 psi
Cylinder 4 - 165 psi

The turbo is just a standard Garrett T2, running at 0.75 bar of boost (I thought uprated chips allowed to run at 1 bar?).

Other engine mods I have are K&N air filter / air induction kit, bleed valve, dump valve and thats about it really.

The car is running on 14" Compomotive TH2 wheels with Avon tyres !

That's it I think really !

So what is the compression now? 115psi is definatly too low

IMO 180BHP is asking a lot for the stock Garrett T2 turbo. Its no bigger than an Uno item. However it will probably do it with a good engine and a lot of boost. 0.75 bar is definatly not enough.

What boost is it designed to run with that chip? If you have a bleed valve, the factory boost controll solenoid cant controll the boost anymore, you have to increase it manually with the bleed. Running high boost on a small turbo with just a bleed valve is usually difficult, you get a poor boost curve.
