Hi everybody! Before I begin I would like to point out that my mechanical knowledge of cars is virtually zero so please bear with me.

I have a 1989 16v Intergrale and I am having major problems with the tick-over and engine starting when hot.

At present I have had to disconnect the cable from the potentiometer because when it is connected the engine 'ticks-over' at about 3000 r.p.m. :!:

I have taken it to a couple of places to be looked at (Lancia specialists) and they don't know what it is. I have been told that normally you just blip the throttle and it should return to normal but this one doesn't.

It has been rectified once by a mechanic fiddling with the voltage output of something and it was okay for about 3 weeks but then it returned!!!!

Also, When the car was running for some time and then switched off it wouldn't start....not even 'turn-over'...just a 'click' in the engine bay. When it was left for about an hour (and cooled down) it started first time!?!?! Any ideas on that one :?: Could it be related to the problem above :?:

Also...last one...when I am driving (which hasn't been for a while since the above problem started) the battery light flickers on and off....especially on bumpy roads....I am assuming that this is due to a dodgy connection somewhere....any ideas??

Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone may be able to offer, or even a name of a good Lancia mechanic in the South-east of England that may be able to help me.

I am starting to lose faith in her and think she may be posessed!!!   :D

The cutting out and the sound of the solenoid and the alterantor light do sound linked. Has the car been neglected? Where in the South East are you located as this covers a huge area?

Your best move would be to get the car serviced by a proper Lancia specialist, try Barry Waterhouse at Evolution Engineering 0207 703 2225 in London, it will probably work out cheaper in the long run and you'll get the problem sorted.

The car has actually been very well looked after and garaged all the time, but obviously dont know how the previous owner treated it. The car is, on the whole (other than the problems) in very good condition.

I am in the Grays area in Essex.

I have tried John Whalley in Bishops Stortford and he couldn't really help unfortunately.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Could be that Barry Waterhouse at Evolution is going to be your best option if you haven't already tried him. He's located just south of Elephant and Castle.

best of luck,

If your car is "idling" at 3000 RPM, it's a certain thing that you have an air leak, or the idle air control (IAC) is malfunctioning. Whether the fault is in the IAC or whether the IAC position is being incorrectly adjusted by the ECU remains to be determined.
