Guys,
I just put a new Accel ignition module in my car and can't believe the difference! I would strongly recommend that anyone with an injection beta spend $85 and get one today!
Now the next question, has anyone successfully integrated an aftermarket perfomance coil on one of these cars?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

$85!? 8O I've been running one of these "performance" modules along with a Pertronix Flamethrower coil on my 124 for almost three years. I got it from the local Schucks for $36! It and the coil do provide a bit more spark though. I opened up the gaps to 45 thou and indexed the plugs.
Oh, further to your question... if you want a better selection of aftermarket coils, try to mount the 124 style electronic ignition. It has the coil, heatsink and module all as one assembly and uses standard canister type coils. Pertronix makes a great drop-in coil for this setup with 40-some thousand volts and a 1.5 ohm primary resistance.

Does anyone out there have specs on a stock coil in the '82 EFI setup? I was thinking that I could shop around for a MSD or Accel coil and get a little more voltage.

Dave

Say, about this Accel ignition module you mention; is it perchance the same "performance" swap-in-for-stock control module as sold by Vick? Just curious; I'd been wondering about that item, myself. FWIW, I gather it should work on my '79 car'b Zag as well, which IIRC has the same electronic stock ignition system as later FI cars, non? Would some cheaper alternative work just as well? I wouldn't want to bother with some kit designed to retrofit an olde-skoole condenser'n'points setup, which was the potential appeal of Vick's performance module; it just swaps in for the stock ign. controller and uses the existing electronic trigger, dizzy, cap, rotor, coil, etc.

what kind of difference did you notice?
where did you get the Acel?

Guys,
I got the Accel module from Vick Auto (~$85) for the little bolt in guy, you have to remove the big rectangular heat sink on the driver's side wheel well (close to the brake master cylinder), then it is an easy to replace the stock module (it is screwed to the back side of the heat sink).
Performance increase, noticeable. Quantifiable, definitely.
Now who's gonna help me out with the specs on the coil so I can get a performance one?
Later,
Dave

Ok. I just ordered an Accel module for Bridget from Vick's....I am taking everyone's word that I will see a big improvement. The price has gone up to $96, but Bridget says she wants one...and what Bridget wants, Bridget gets! She is so demanding. Hey, if there is any other replacement or add-on gadget I can put on to improve performance, please let me know. MR

The stock one is just a regular old GM 4-pin if I recall correctly.
The performance replacements (at least the Accel ones) would be the:
ACC-35361
or
ACC-35367
$39.88 and $65.88 respectively from Summit. I assume Vick's unit is the #367?

It is the ACC-35367.

Well, that's good- I wasn't suggesting that paying a few extra bucks to get it from a FIAT vendor is not good, although if it were the cheap one ( I personally) might have returned it - seems some FIAT vendors (and I am not lumping Vick's into this catgory by any means) get a bit greedy on specific parts that are widely available, probably on the basis that a lot of FIAT owners don't realize it's a generic part. From what I've seen electrical components are especially subject to this, I've seen relays, fuses, and voltage regulators going for 4-6 times the "normal" cost. I know a lot of FIAT owners don't know how to make a Bosch relay into a Marelli relay, or realize that a Bosch voltage regulator can be had cheaply practically anywhere, but IMO that's no reason to gouge the poor saps.

Okay, since ye mention it, how do you make a Bosch relay into a Marelli relay (aside from swapping the outside shells so the logo's "right")? ;) :D

You disengage leads #86 and #30 in the socket and swap them. This allows the use of a $4 Bosch relay in place of a $16 (and much harder to source) Marelli relay.

Guys,
This weekend I managed to replace my aging (and failing) stock coil with the Accel Super Coil
(http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=accel+coil+super&x=39&y=8&Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&searchinresults=false&N=0&target=egnsearch.asp)
I mounted it under the radiator brace (between the strut tower and radiator) near the front with the coil wire facing the engine. I think that it should cool a bit better there.
I also managed to "smoke" the Accel ignition module as I didn't have an electric meter when I was doing it. So when I get another ignition module and have it in, I'll post the "results".
Anyway, thought you might be interested.
