I own a Lancia Delta HFi Turbo 1988. Due to epilepsy I could not drive for 3 years and so the car went into disrepair. Now I would like to do the car up as I have a lot of fond memories of it. I also own a Fiat Coupe Turbo so there is no hurry to do it up. The problem is I don't really know where to start or how much it is likely to cost me. The obvious faults are as follows:

Rust

1) Rust around sunroof.
2) Rust on roof where it meets fron windscreen.
3) Rust on roof where it meets hatchback door.
4) Rust around front windscreen wipers.
5) Heavy rust on bottom of front drivers door (probably needs replacing).
6) Rust on front passenger door.
7) Rust around handle of hatchback door.
8) Rust on wheel floor arch of drivers back door (not on door only noticable when opening door though this is probably far more worrying than all the visable superficial rust mentioned above)
9) Rust in compartment of boot where jack is kept (removed rust and there is now hole going all the way through that you can now see the ground)

Tyres & brakes & shocks

1) Disks look obviously rusted but hadbrake seems to not have locked nor have the normal brakes & shocks seem to be OK.
2) 2 of the tyres need to be replaced.

Engine:

1) 1 Oil cooler pipe needs replacing as cracked.
2) pipe to airfilter needs replacing as cracked but airfilter seems OK.
3) Engine turns over & spark plugs spark but engine doesn't start. Not sure if this is a fuel relay, pump, ECU or immobiliser problem (had this on my fiat coupe which seems cut off fuel supply when immobiliser is set). Checked water levels, fuel, oil & brake fluids etc. & all seems OK. Have also checked fuses & all electrics seem to be working OK appart from a few gremlins which you would expect after all this time. I will probably need to drain all the fluids anyway.

I need advise on what my next steps should be and how much this will cost me. Any bodywork, engine, turbo, ECU & fuel injection items I will have to get outside help in as my knowlage on these is very limited. Does anybody know who could do any of these cheaply in the Guildford/Surrey area. On the positive side the inside of the car is immaculate.

Thanks,

Jason  8O :D :?:

Hi Jason

I had a HFie 89 Turbo which I ran very happilly for about 4 years - untill last year when it failed its MOT due to rust in the boot by the jack. This wil be you main problem as it is an MOT failure and will need substantial welding - to the tune of a few hundred quid I would have though. Next would be the rear arches as you dont want the turrets coming away, which they will.

As far as the doors go you would be best off finding an HF Turbo thats being broken that has better condition doors than yours - Most people cant get more than a few hundred quid for a car in very good condition so if you find a non runner its almost worthless.

THe rust on the fron and rear screens are both screen-out jobs - again this will cost you a few hundred quid.

Handbrake - Caliper will lock up when not used - a new one is about 80 quid I think and you might need a new cable too - andy Lancia specialist can fix that not too expensively.

You could do worse than take car to www.evocars.com - as they are only up in Elephant and castle - check the evoforum for details of more specialists closer to home

Can you hear the pump prim when you turn the ignition ?

Basically this will cost you a substantial amount of money to restore ... and you may well be better off getting a running car for a couple of hundred quid and putting your immaculate interior in it and keeping some of the parts

Why bother is my opinion - let go man of you nostalgia - scrap it and sell the Fiat and buy an Evo!

I did and dont regret it - I seem to have got a good one touchwood and have spend less on it in a year than I spend on my garage visit with the HF.

Good luck - ask me what you like - Barry at Evocars is very good for advice and parts and servicing

Regards

Matt Fidler (weird thats not your surname is it?)

Seriously spooky, I recently helped out another HFie owner (also Jason) in the same predicament......

In his case the shell was so badly gone rusted out and the mechanics in need of such a serious overhaul, it was felt it would be too much of a task to sort out a re-shell which might be your best bet if time and cost are no object.
In the end the 'other' Jason bought a mint 1600 GTie from a friend of mine - so there's a few good HFie parts available....
Sad to say that there's fewer and fewer good and unmolested Delta shells around, but if you can find a solid 1300LX makes good enough place to start... If you do go for it, I know of some new old stock panels kicking around up here in sunny Scotland - but might be too far for you to consider :?:
Good luck anyway.
