I'm on my second cam cover gasket on my 16V Thema turbo engine, and it failed just like the first one. The two rubber lips on the gasket that seal against the top of the head fracture at the base in a couple of spots and there are other failure areas that point to overcompression of the gasket. The cam cover has raised bosses and it looks like these are intended to bottom against the head, establishing a set compression height for the gasket. It doesn't take a lot of torque on the screws to bottom them, so I assume that's what you're supposed to do. The factory manual doesn't mention anything in this area.

So now my engine is leaking oil, making a big embarrasing mess. Anyone else have this problem or any ideas about this? I live in California and have a stainless steel exhaust so I don't really need the anti-corrosion benefits of continuous oil coating!
