Il fenice (my '81 Zagato) has been converted to carb before I bought it, and seems to be set up to run the fuel pump directly when the ignition is turned on (no relay). Is this a bad thing?

Thanks,

Yeah, it's bad from a safety aspect. It should be wired through a relay which is activated by the low oil pressure switch. This way if the engine dies (due to a wreck or loss of oil pressure) the fuel pump will shut off.

The fuel pump should only be allowed to run:
1. During cranking (start key position).
2. In the run key position with oil pressure (low oil pressure light out).
