I'm back on the twin carb project but have a number of little probs.

My new inlet gasket does not cover the central water gallery in the head. Are there two types of gasket or is my new one for a vx?

The engine is a 1600, 1979 ish. The guy croft manifold fouls the starter motor solenoid. I guess this is because the 1600 is not as tall as the 2000 and mr Crofts manifold is for the 2L.

The original rad does not sit well in the front of the car, I'd like one wider but not as tall that can be mounted further forwards. Apart from the newer injection type anyone tried fitting something from another car?

Careful about mounting any non-stock radiator and mind filling it with coolant properly -- if the top of the rad is any lower than your engine's head, you'd run the risk of getting air bubbles trapped in the head, 8O so you'd have to follow a coolant-filling and air-bleeding procedure similar to FIAT Spiders (involving jacking up the front of the car, etc.)...

Using a Guy Croft manifold, it is proving impossible to mount twin side drafts on a 1600 (84mm) engine. Even with a little machining the manifold still fouls the starter solenoid.

I can only assume that the 2L block with it's 10mm extra height is the solution, bit drastic though.

Project again abandonned for a few weeks!

You possibly try sourcing a smaller solenoid... Not sure where to look, but there are a lot of Bosch starters out there (if yours uses Bosch instead of Marelli). Perhaps some model used a compatible smaller solenoid?

you have to use the fiat 131 gc manifold the 2L wont work no matter what you do it says so in his book and onthe website email him and ask hes great for this hes help me with my stage two conversion heaps lots of ideas etc first thing most do is change to higher capicity engine 1800 2000 for the high yeild in ponys but us 1600 lads gotta keep to gether so in dhort chuck it sell it whatever buy the 131 fiat one from guy and there you go problem solved

The project is mothballed for the forseeable future, can't bring myself to sell the carbs, they are almost new and I'd loose a small fortune.

Just have to start welding up the 2L coupe.............and fit them to that.

dont sell the caabs just buy the 131 manifold from gc with the kit and problem solved.
the carbs im presuming are 40mm so the will fit the 131 manifold and its so easy for the sake of 18 pounds or sumthing just get the manifold and do if you are using biigger than 40mm they are too big for a 1600 anyway so keep the carbs buy the manifold whalla twin cab conversion complete

I thought the 131 manifold was to be used on "upright" engines and the beta manifold on "inclined" engines. I haven't looked at the prices but I bet a new manifold is a lot more that 18 quid. Anyway, old carb back on and car is left out of the way for a bit.

i ment 180 or sumthin there aboouts and there are two types go to the gc site and send him an email and he will tell you witch one you need there is a slantend one and a short one and i think a straight one anyway this is what guy told me and it has worked with excellent results twin dcoes on a 131 manifold mines slanted or 280price wise its worth emailing him he does answere you and there are some cool tech stuff on the site toothe only thing is the 131 manifold has a bracket under it that makes sure there is no chance it will break uder stressthe book or gc himself cn tell you all of this trust in gc he is probably the best at what he does so he should know how to fix any problem

Hi,

nope the GC Beta manifold cannot be made to fit the 1600 at all, the only solution is a GC 131 type with adaptor plate, a wedge with different holes etc to set the 131 man at the 20 deg tilt, this will clear the starter. Only done it a dozen times ever, balls-aching job, but well worth the effort.

I normally ask which Beta people are ordering for, to avoid this problem, and don't knowingly sell the Beta man anything but the 2 liter, if this is my mistake tell me straightaway on email -

gcengines@aol.com

If it's not my error, suggest you sell it on, keep the fitting kit and carbs and write to me about a 131 man and adpator plate, OK?

No, it was my own fault. I bought the as new carbs and manifold second hand, they were fitted to a two liter engine at the time. and I just assumed they would fit a 1600 as well.

there yo go skuffy mr croft himself esy fix problem solved and dont forget to vote for him
by the way mr croft still waiting to hear about my stage 2 conversion of the 1600 and how to go about doing what and sourcing what, the engines on the stand waiting paitently my other engine (in the car) is doing a wonderful job but it has this problem its not fast enough im starting another 2L in about two weeks aswell but this will be an experimental engine cooked up between myself and a freind who build preformance BMWS mainly m3s so we will be going bannanas on the 2L hoping for aroun 200bhp useable streetable power all na of course then if thats not enough an eaton m90 supercharger so around 400 ponies but not as streetable

Hi Skufy, if you have no further use for that manifold, I may be interested in purchasing it. If you wish to sell it, can you let me know whether it's the straight or offset type and nominate your price (if you don't need it of coarse). And you haven't ground too much off it?Thanks. Jeremy.

550 Euros + shipping for the as new 40 DCOE s,(jets for std 2L) manifold(guy croft offset type) K&Ns and linkcages. Will not split as I can't imagine what I could do with a pair of twin DCOE and price is probably more than the market but it's what that lot has cost me so far.

I now have a volumex to keep me busy.
