As I posted on Delphi:

Today I (mostly my Evo 2 in fact) participated in some shooting for TVP1 (polish public tv prime channel). Programme is about driving safety - kind of safe driving school on tv, with road cops as instructors. As part of fun, participants get two round of fast drive with rally driver. It takes prace on small track (1000+m for 1 lap) in Police Training Centre near Warsaw. Usually they are going in 220BHP Audi A3 1.8T Quattro. But not this time.

My friend (Robert Herba - 11 times rally Champion of Poland) asked me to enable them to use my Evo 2. Aslo another his friend came with '02 Euro-spec Impreza WRX STI.

First immpressions came from STI owner (when we met in Warsaw before). He came ot of his car and said: "Wow, that's beutifull car. Every single metr closer and I started to love that Lancia more and love my Subaru less". After we (very fast) drove 30km to facility, he said, that he was amazed, he couldn't loose Evo 2 even straight line, not to mention corners. Later, after small drive in my Evo 2 he publicly commented that "Lancia is 300 times better than Subaru" becouse 10 years ago italians were able to made car that stands up comparing to STI. And it's biggest rally legend ever. But he didn't decide to trade his STI for my Evo 2 ;)

Robert Herba was driving STI and Evo 2 on same track, 5-6 times, 2 laps each. On his second ever lap in Lancia he managed to spin it in tight right corner just afer open right bend. This was his only spin this day. After all this driving he commented, that Lancia can be driven almost as fast as STI or Lancer Evo. He said that car is on even ground, with shortage of power is not a problem. Eventually he pointed that brakes and drivetrain designs are below STI. Especially lack of front LSD. He also pointed that STI seems more stable and less prone to spinning. Brakes on Evo 2 were far less effcient that those big Brembos on STI. He complained about wild nature of Lancia, when diven from rear spins, driven from front doesn't corner. He said, that what japan engineers manage to improove over Integrale in last 10 years is mostly in AWD system and (rear) suspention design.

His overall comment was, that these cars are equally fast in hand of experienced driver, with STI more easy to drive and more forgiving. He asked me to let him now when I'll decide to sell my Evo 2 :)

Bouth cars were unmodified, Evo 2 on 205/50-16 winter tyres (Dunlop Winter M2 front, Pirelli W210A rear) while STI on 225/45-17 winter tyres (Pirelli Wintersport 240 all round).

Some photos from track are on:

It is funny that I read this today, as just yesterday I got to see 2 of these amazing Subarus. Here in northern Italy, a bunch of us Americans that live and work here had set up an auto-cross track at the airport we are stationed at. After we set up the course 2 professional drivers in there WRX STIs showed up and wanted to have some fun, even letting a couple of us drive there cars! One of the cars was race modified with sponsors even, and he had the fastest time of the day by 3 seconds over the stock STI who was faster by 4 seconds from the closest competitor. Those Brembo brakes are HUGE! And those cars have amazing power! I was humbled in my Montecarlo, although it is nearly 30 years old! I did manage to beat a Toyota MR2 turbo, but that doesn't matter, it was sure a fun day! 8O
