I recently had a 84 coupe with a seized engine come into my posession,( courtesy of a friend) and was investigating what engine/tuning options were available.
I previously done the compression, cams and carbs route. (Great car and thrills, but wasn't fond of the industion roar.)
The obvious conversion would be a volumex, but unfortunately they wern't imported to Aus so it is not a redily available option for power upgrade.
This lead me to thinking about alternative power sources and had wondered if anyone had tried a Thema turbo conversion? (I know it has been done in a monte, albeit very difficult)
I realise the intake and exhaust are reversed and that there would be issues with splicing the injection electrics but welcome anyones thoughts/ experiences on the matter.
Along the same line,
I read with interest the popularity of the Alfa V6 and Thema 8.32 conversions for the Monte and had also wondered if anyone had considered these for the coupe or HPE?
Surely the engine compartment of the Monte isn't that much larger than the coupe?

well as we know a nissan sodett will go into one why not a thema or a delta engine personally i would go a delta and just pop the top half of the coupe and whack it on a bottem half of a delta so to to speak those line with 4WD 2L turbo oh my god please let me die now a happy man with that car but proably not that easy to do in real life we have been playin with supercargers from the toyota the 1GG type it has been hard making and modifiying manifolds but its getting there you could use basically ny small horizontal jap turbo motor for a front wheel drive most all of them would fit with ease like the mazdaa 1.8 or the starlet 1,3 or the welll you getthe pic ture what state are you in i would be interested to have a look at doing some klinda project like this as im a little bummed at the moment with my own car but wont go intospecifics anyay go for it man turbo supercharge both evn thema delta whatever do it more diverseness outside the box type stuff people

my thoughts about 16valve turbo would be mainly (aside from the obvious head reversal issue) space considerations I have a delta hpe turbo and the 2litre 16v is packed in tighter than sardines in a tin.

the beta bay is not that roomy. main problem being width - which is the reason i take the engine and gearbox out when working on the clutch. there's too small a space to push them apart.
i don't think a thema lump will fit, it's just wider.
another problem being the inclination of the motor toward the back - not many motors are designed to sit that way, and installing one in a more vertical angle will require a huge bonnet bulge and will change the car's balance.
in my opinion, the best route will be to get a delta turbo MK1 (carb) engine, which is very very similar to the beta's, it's manifolds are similarly oriented (as opposed to more modern engines in which intake is at the back), and with some fiddling, it can be converted to a modern MFI.

I had fairly well convinced myself that the later 16v option wasn't feasible and your replys have confirmed.
10 years ago we had looked into installing a 16v head to an 8v block but aborted the project and the induction and exhaust just got too hard.
Out of curiosity I had wondered about the alfa v6 and the thema 8.32 given that these are both popular transplants in the monte.
Am I to assume that no-one has tried or looked into this for a coupe of HPE?
Is the 8v volumex the pinnacle of beta powerplant evolution?
The other conversion I noted when browsing the Betaboyz site was a black coupe with what looks like a nissan 16v turbo engine?
I assume this is what badboyboogzy was refering to in his reply.
Does any know technical details on this car (again out of interest) as I'm not interested in replicating the conversion, I could never put a jap lump into my car.
