Hi all, have literally just come inside from test driving my VX coupe after fitting a 45 DCOE. I'm impressed.

I need to sort all the jetting etc as it's not running as well as it could, but still very impressive, I'm quite pleased. At the moment it will only accelerate well at just over half throttle, it just bogs and feels very restricted at full throttle, but at half throttle it's noticeably quicker than with the standard carb on.

I've had to make up a new top bracket for the oil cooler to tilt it forward, I have also cut the front part of the upper channel on the radiator off so it fits into the space at the front, and trimmed the rear sticky up bit to clear the bracket for the upper engine brace. All this have given about 50mm clearance at the entrance to the carb, just enough room to get a K&N filter on, I still have to make up some ducting to ensure cold air gets to all of the filter.

I used a standard weber linkage kit and mated it to the existing accelerator cable. And have used the electric fan out of a standard Beta saloon as it's a little smaller.

All this started as a result of fitting a new water pump, I figured that seeing as it's off the road I might as well go the whole hog, pleased I did. Ideally I wanted to fit a smaller radiator but couldn't find anything suitable.

Next week it's off around to the mechanic's place to have the Guy Croft 3A inlet cam fitted, I really don't want to mess about with that sort if thing, he's got all the shims etc, as the cams base circle is 1mm smaller in diameter than standard.

Has anyone fitted a GC cam before? Will it get away with thicker shims or will there have to be more work done?

Thought this may be of interest to a few of you, oh yeah and I can post photos if anyone's interested.

Hey Paul,

Congrats on getting the mod done at long last. Yes please, some photos would be very interesting.

Did you go with a VX pump in the end or just the standard item?

Hi Chris, yeah I made sure I got the VX pump, well a Montecalo pump from the monte hospital, couldn't find one here, I'll take some photos next week and put them in my gallery.

Hi Fingers

Pulled the engine out of the VX this weekend. Doing the oil pump, new front shocks and a few other sundry repairs.

Any track day this year?

Yes there's one in July sometime, I'll let you know the exact date when I find out, I'm looking forward to this one.

Ruapuna track day, 18 June, there will be more details with regards to times closer to the date.

Hopefully I will have the VX reassembled by then otherwise I will have to bring the Lotus.

What a dilemma. If it was me I'd bring both! But it's a little closer for me, I'm only 15 mins away. Look forward to seeing you.

It's only running untill it drains the float bowl at the moment, which isn't long, about 30 seconds, I've had a look at the fuel circuit up to it and it's fine so I'm going to try a larger needle and seat in the carb itself, it's only a 200 at the moment, so I'll track down a 225.

225 is about right for the NV. How about your fuel pressure? Max it should be is 3.5lbs/sq inch at idle otherwise will flood the carb.

And what exhaust manifold are you using? the GC3A cam and Weber 45 will not run properly on a std manifold as far as I'm aware.

Check out the photogallery for my HPE VX.

Good luck.

Yeah the fuel pressure seems fine, I've opened the carb up as soon as it stops and the bowl is empty. There's a clear fuel filter just before the carb which is pretty much full as it stops too. I'm using the std exhaust manifold, I heard from Guy Croft when I was getting all this sorted, he said as long as I have 2 straight through resonator type mufflers it should be fine, I've got three, but will remove one if need be. I'll see how I go, can't spend as much time as I would like on it at the moment either which is annoying. Thanks for the help.

Your conversion looks fantastic, what sort of radiator did you use? And is it ok to blank those water lines out of the inlet manifold?

Ditch the first silencer. It might be worth getting an inline fuel pressure gauge to set fuel pressure. Thought the std exhust manifold was rather restrictive for anything other than std engine.

Rad is all alloy 50mm core.

Inlet manifold has water lines blanked as these feed the std carb to hasten warm up if my memory serves me right. So not needed for the Weber 45.

hope this helps.

Thanks, I had trouble finding a rad to fit so just modified the std. Yes and was just wondering about those water lines off the inlet, thought they may have been required to ensure the system didn't trap any air anywhere.

Off to get a bigger needle valve after work tonight, will look at a press. gauge too.

Hey Andybeta, is the dcoe the only engine mod you've done apart from what you've already told me? I'm curious to know what your jetting is for the standard setup. It looks like it's going to be a while before my mechanic can fit me in to do the cam so I want to drive it a little, at the moment it's way to rich and I don't really need to give the bores a wash.

Oh yeah I forgot about your inlet cam(just checked your gallery)
