I have found the "Power Clean" purple cleaner sold at Autozone works much much better than any engine degreaser out there, use it straight. We buy it in the gallon jugs and refill our spray bottle we use so much of it around here. Greased Lightening is about the same, (I have used it with good results too), and I have heard good things about Simple Green but I didn't have much luck with it

When I want something strong, I use the purple stuff with the . . . what is it, "Castrol" or "Prestone" or some brand usually associated with another type of product, but yeah, big purple jug full of purple stuff works well.
I use Simple green when I am doing more of a detailing job and the purple stuff when I want to clean up something really messy. ....and brake cleaner for metal parts already off the car...

Parrafin ! A lot cheaper than anything else . . reasonably safe (not like petrol . . !). But it does contain water so can cause unprotected metal to rust . . .
If you're a real meanie, you can collect the old, dirty stuff, leave in in a jam jar for a week or two and all the grot sinks to the bottom so you can use it again .. .

Hello guys,
I use Comma Hyperclean, brush on rinse off with water.
Wallace, is Paraffin still on sale in the UK? I have tried several filling stations but none have it.

I like the autoglym product, it doesn't make the engine bay stink like most cleaners do and it's also good for taking oil stains off the living room carpet on occasions when I've forgotten to take my shoes off after working in the garage..... saves a certain amount of ear ache from the mrs!!! (and it doesn't make the living room stink either!)

For Paraffin also try hardware store. Could also be labled Kerosine.

I get mine from the lcal ironmongers. . but it is a "country" type one which does everything . . you turn up with a can and they fill it up ! you can even run it in your diesel car if you don't like paying the excise duty . . . . .

A very high grade of parraffin is sold as "lamp oil". which is not the same as Kerosene (no odor or flaamable vapor). Water content is virtually nil, but at that grade it gets expensive. If you want cheap, you can get Tiki torch fuel for about $2/gal, a lot cheaper than commercial degreaser and a lot nicer to work with than petrol!
