View Full Version : 2000HF injection, engine cutting out

Got my 2000 HF from the garage a few weeks back, where amongst other things, the fuel-pum and hoses was replaced.
It was running fine until today, when after stoping to do some shopping this happend:
The engine started, but died as I was about to drive off. Then it refused to start again. I left it for a while, the tried again, and the engine started fine, then died again. After a few tries with this it started and seem to be ok, however after driving for about 5 min it died again. In the end I had to get it towed home.:(
Could this be caused by the fuel-injection system, giving to much fuel?
Any comments and thoughts on this is much appreciated.

I'd try the connections to the fuel pump first bad connection is a prime candidate for this behaviour in my experience of 2000HF, can you hear the pump running all the time? If it is running badly and over fuelled especially if only on one bank of cylinders ECU could have failed (you will find in that circumstance that oil level starts to rise fuel in oil!) very heavy over fuelling can be caused by a leaky cold start injector. Sorry if that is not much help i ran a 2000HF for many years so any questions please PM me and I'll see what I can remember.

Thank you for your reply Rossocorsa. I will have a look at the fuel pump connections. Perhaps there is a bad contact there since the pump was just replaced. The engine has allways (since Ive had it, for about 16 months.) been running jerky, at around 1800-1900 rpm. when Im not pushing the accelerator. I tried mixing injection cleaner with the petrol, and it helped a little, but its still jerky at times. Im thinking the Bosh injection system needs a overhaul.

the most likely cause of bad running on the D jetronic is a faulty pressure sensor the membrane inside can develop small air leaks and not hold vacuum this in turn leads to incorrect fuelling first thing to check is if it will hold a vacuum on the inlet that connects to the inlet manifold if it doesn't you need to find another sensor. the whole sytem is very simple and essentially reliable as it is electronic it doesn't really require an overhall as such simply check each component and replace those that are out of spec, the ecu itself pretty much will work or not work without much inbetween although as already mentioned I did have one fail with one bank of injectors left permanently open (!). Most sensors you can check with a multimeter it's just the pressure sensor that needs checking by vacuum. Also check that the relays on the front wing are OK. Failure to start can also be caused by ignition switch sticking it has tiny pins inside that move up and down at different stages as you turn the key if they stick in the up position this stops the ignition firing when the starter is turning over! It is possible to bodge this as a temporary measure by removing some of the pins did this years ago on my old car with no ill effects (and indeed it continues to run well for its current owner with same arrangement)

Thanks again for your reply. Today the car started fine, and I took a ride (about 20Km) and she ran without problems all the way. Hmm.. I dont know what to make of this. She is acting like a moody italian lady :)
I will have to find a mechanic in my town who has experience with the Bosh injection system, who can have a look at it.

I think that would really suggest a bad pump connection whenever I've had something off a car I use this stuff on all my connectors http://www.contralube.com/ not expensive and it really works one tube goes a very long way. D jetronic is really simple read up on it and then DIY!! Search the net there is lots of stuff on Djetronic especially for VWs most is also relevant to a 2000

I had an 82 Zagato, which would on hard acceleration, on cold days, miss and cut out, or even flat die. the problem, was the rubber plenum kept slipping off the throttlebody on the bottom with engine movement. might check that as well as what everyone else suggested...

Beta uses L jetronic completely different system
