Has anyone used a 1.3 5speed box in a 1.6, [series 2/3]or are the ratios too different. Also any special tools needed for swapping a box. Thoughts and ideas appreciated

It depends what you want to use the car. There are quite a number of different ratios combinations. Suggest phoning to discuss it in more detail

However, swapping is fairly straightforward.

Brian, I am maybe one of the few who managed to shatter a fulvia gearbox. I did with my s2 1.6 in a rallye. Due to lack of time and spares, I fitted a 1.3 5speed box in the 1.6. It has the same final drive (3.91) and somewhat less closer gears. I did not like that a bit!! A 1600 goes very smooth with the 1600box. The 1st gear of the 1.3box is too short, and the gears are spaced too wide, which means dropping the revs too much. I would go for a 1600 if you run a 1600. After this incident last year I bought a lot of 4 hf boxes. I have one left now for sale. The rest was sold already.

For the ratio's:
S2 1.3: 1st: 4.159, 2nd:2.698, 3rd:1.793,4th:1.284,5th:1.000, final drive: 11/43=3.91
S2 1.6: 1st: 3.646, 2nd:2.473, 3rd:1.719,4th:1.317,5th:1.000, final drive: 11/43=3.91

Any one know how the ratios of a Series 2 Fulvia compare to a Series 1?

Robroy,

I was waiting for someone else to respond to your query about the S1 ratios compared to the S2, but was eventually driven to look it up (in Oude Weernink's excellent "Lancia Fulvia & Flavia").

Peter provided the S2 ratios for both 1.3 and 1.6 liter cars in an early message on this thread. Weernink shows the following for the 1st series cars:

Fulvia Coupe and Sport ('65-67) 1216 or 1231cc cars:

"...gear ratios 3.690/2.179/1.419/1.0/rev 4.112:1; final drive coupe/Sport 11/43 or 10/37, 27.8 or 29km/h (17.3 or 18mph) per 1,000rpm in 4th gear."

Fulvia Coupe Rallye 1.3 and Sport 1.3 ('67-69) 1298cc cars: "Similar to" above, except:

"...final drive Coupe 10/37, 18 mph per 1,000 rpm in 4th gear."

Fulvia Coupe Rallye 1.3S and Sport 1.3S:

"...final drive Coupe 10/37, Sport 11/39, 29 or 30.3 km/h (18 or 18.8mph) per 1,000rpm in 4th gear."

Not sure where you were headed with your question, but it looks like Lancia was kind enough to provide several options for the S1 Fulvia owner looking to play with the gearbox ratios, even without trying to shoe horn a later 5-speed into the car.

If you're interested in seeing some nice snaps and commentary on Lancia gearboxes, Jaan Hjorth has some nicely illustrated riffs on the 4- and 5-speed Fulvia gearboxes (and Flaminia transaxles, and Appia doors) at: http://www.eddinsmoto.com/id79.htm

Fantastic, much appreciated and thanks for your efforts in searching this out - I wouldn't have known where to start looking. I'll study this closely as I wanted to compare my Series 1 Fulvia with my now departed Series 2. I had thought about installing the Series 2 box for performance gain and better mpg when on motorways.
