View Full Version : What a 130 TC cam can do to your Volumex

A friend of mine has just installed an 130TC inletcam to his Beta VX, he used a 2000 IE camshaft for the outlet one.

Here's the result:

Quite a nice reslut i guess??

The torque figure especially looks much nicer. Nice reslut :P

But I,m wondering, the "original" HP does not look very well? Only 117HP, and a VX should have 130HP from factory. Or am I missing something?

I take it that's "at the wheels" - any idea what the transmission losses would be ??

Merijn,

It's power at the crank, so not at the wheels. The engine is a healthy one, i guess claimed power outputs were a bit optimistic from Lancia?

I dont think lancias power figures were incorrect. A friend used to have an alfa 33 that had been dynoed at its factory 137bhp and there was nothing in it between the 2 cars on the road (granted lancias torque was down low, whereas alfas was up high).

Are you really sure its at the crank? Our Monte's should have already 120HP. Can't imagine they estimate power so over-optimistic from factory... The at the wheels explanation seems more logic to me then.

If it really is at the wheels, losses for a normal VX should be some 13HP, about 10% transmission losses...I don't know what ammount of torque a standard VX has.

PS. How's work on your Monte progressing?

Groetjes!

Merijn, a VX has about 25% loss in transmission. Our 2.0 liters have less because of other "crown and pignon wheel".

Not much progress in the Monte!

The original link seems to have died - does anyone have an update? :)

I agree with Kees, this looks more like an at-the-wheels figure. I'm not for a second suggesting that you are lying of course, just that your mechanic may be using a little 'kid-ology'.

If you think about it, so-called 'crank' figures can only ever be an estimate, unless you take the engine out and put it on a proper engine dynamometer. And although transmission loss figures are often quoted, I've not seen them empiricaly tested (has anyone?).

At the end of the day, people get too hung up on power output figures anyway. If you took your car to another mechanic and had it tested on a different set of rollers you could easily get a +/-10% difference in the figures (I know this SHOULDN'T be the case, but unfortunately it is).

The only REAL use for these power plots is to measure changes. If you had a plot from before the cam was fitted (done on the same rollers) then you could compare them and make some sensible conclusions.

But hey, I don't really want to rain on your parade, and as long as your mate is happy with the car, that's all that counts! :D

Cheers

And that's exactly what the plot showed. And not at the wheels.

OK, my bad on that point. :o
