Had to take my engine and gearbox out recently to tackle a collection of miscellaneous tasks. In the process of doing so, I found that the sequence advocated by Haynes was not the most logical so I sat down afterwards to make some notes that would help me next time. I've now turned those notes into an HTML document which I'm sharing in the hope that

1. It may help others.
2. Others may contribute to the document and create a better set of instuctions for everyone.

The latest version is available here http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/pope171/beta/beta_engine_removal.htm. Comments welcome.

I found that quite interesting, might even have a go at this engine/box removal business.

Well I started putting the engine back in today. No problem, I thought. I've done this once before and now I've got my wonderful notes to help. Just reverse the process. No problem.

WRONG!

What a day! Suffice to say, the engine and gearbox are back in the car but I didn't have time to reconnect much.

I'll be doing the following at the end of all this:

1. Producing a set of notes on the re-installation procedure.
2. Updating the removal procedure.
3. Adding photos to make the whole thing a little more interesting.

Watch this space...

By the way, if anyone objects to my frequent use of photos on the forum please let me know. I know that it can slow down page load times for those using dial-up and can be irritating.

I've just updated the engine removal notes that I first published at the end of last year. Once again you can find them here:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/pope171/beta/beta_engine_removal.htm

If anyone has downloaded or printed the first version, I would advise that they replace it with version 2. I am not keeping track of specifc changes but, in general terms, this is what has happened:

* Page one now has a picture of my home made body support trolleys.
* A few items have been re-ordered.
* A couple of alternative methods have been suggested.
* Minor editorial changes.
* Page length changes.
* NO PHOTOS

The last item deserves a comment as I'm normally big on pictures and promised that they would appear in version 2.

When I starting putting my own engine back in the car, I used a printed version of the notes as a checklist. I found the table format very easy to follow and could tick things off much easier than with the Haynes version. I took several photos at the same time and started inserting them into the text. While the pictures added some interest to the document, they also changed the layout so that it no longer worked as the checklist that I found so useful. So, I have published version 2 without pictures but can make photos available if anyone needs to see something that is mentioned in the text.

How about just linking photos from the text where relevant, perhaps setting the link to pop open a new window for that pic? That way, the text would be uninterrupted by pix for printed hardcopy reference purposes, but said pix would still be accessible to clarify matters if desired.

Looks like you're using FrontPage; there should be a checkbox on FP's link-maker dialog panel to make that link pop open a new window. In HTML, the basic tag would be:
<a href="URL-of-pic-here.jpg" target="_blank">linked visible text here</a>It's the target="_blank" bit that does the new window thing. FWIW/FYI, when clicking most any link on the Web, holding [shift] (or [Cmd] on a Mac ;) ) will normally force that link to open in a new window or tab.

That's a very good idea. Will consider it for the next version if there is sufficient demand. I'm not sure how many people will make use of the notes and, given it's not a job that anyone undertakes too often or too readily, it will take quite some time to get feedback I imagine.

Yes, it's a quick and dirty thing with FP :D .
