Hi all,

I was about to finally take my car back across the bay to get it smogged, but it looks like it's not in the mood... the whiny bearing noise from that general area has become much nastier, now more of a knocking/clattering noise.

Question: does anybody have a smog/air pump for a '78 beta? It's specifically for a sedan, but I don't think that should make a difference.

This means I have to remove the battery, tray, and various other bits again, after replacing the belt (noise was present before, I actually pulled the old belt to get rid of it).

Thanks for any leads.

That pump was a fairly generic item; in fact, IIRC they may have used a GM (or possibly Mopar) unit, sensible considering the US-market cars were the only place they'd have been so equipped. Take yours out and bring it to the nearest auto parts chain store; they'll prolly be able to match it up to something in stock.

So I just pulled out the air pump Saturday, and will try to have Napa source me one sometime this week. Talk about opening up some space - pulling out all that smog crap could make a difference to the way I see working on that car. Too bad I live in CA.

Interesting discovery - under the air pump is a dipstick for the transmission fluid (manual transmission car)... who knew?

Ha, yup! I've found the easiest way to get at it is from the passenger side, might wanna get in there with a rag to wipe away the grime first, so you won't get any in your transaxle when you try to reseat the dipstick by feel! The level can get really hard to read on the stick, so I run the edge of a paper napkin down the stick until I see it get wetted by the surface oil.

BTW, when you drain it, notice there's two allen-head drain plugs -- one for the diff, one for the gearbox, even tho' they share the same oil. I found a spout adapter with tube works pretty well to refill -- just screw it onto the bottle while leaving the valve closed, fish around with the end of the tube until you get it into the dipstick hole, then open the valve.
