I'd wish for a simple, succient answer but I doubt it. Do
X 1/9s & Scorpions share radiators? I'm getting mixed
answers from our vendors. Supply is NLA, Scorp specific.
That much I know. This is not an off-the-cuff question: I
need a replacement Scorp. radiator. I took my original 2
- 3 places & each said it's history. Thanks.

I've had my Scorpion radiators re-cored for around $200.00, each. It was the connection between the tubes and the end plates that failed, ie, cores rotted out. The tanks (end headers) were fine. The X 1/9 radiator is not identical, but it will fit, without too much fussing around. Hope this helped.

My experience is that the Scorpion radiator is identical to the X rad. I have several loose X rads and when I took the rad out of the Scorp to replace it, I compared it to the X rads and you could not tell them apart. Not at all surprising since the Scorp is a parts-bin car. The only this that is different are the mounting hardware used for each car. If you need a new rad, the after-market replacement rad I bought from Chris O. is still available:
http://www.fiatplus.com/completete-radiator-pr-278369.html It is an Asian copy, but works very well and fits as the original - solved all of my cooling problems; in fact, I had to put in a warmer thermostat because it cooled so well. Well worth the big bucks, IMO.

As for vendors knowing the difference between Scorp parts and anything else they have on the shelf ...well, you probably know more about your car than they do. I have regularly bought parts from Vicks or IAP for the Scorp that they had no clue cross-ref'd to it. I wouldn't expect your regular parts guy at the "bigger vendors" to have any idea or even care. Chris knows his stuff, and I'm sure DJ will do as well if not better.

Thanks guys. I pulled my leaky Scorp. rad almost 2 yrs. ago.
My favored rad guy said junk, I said sit on it I'll get back. So
I called Obert back then, Rob says $375 [now they're $600?].
Wanting the LBZ to run 1ST money went to that [it runs]. This
month I've re-addressed the Scorpion radiator issue. My "favor-
ed rad guy" is no longer in business. I assume the original Scorp.
rad has been junked. My fault, not his. So I call Obert [again],
Rob says nothing in stock. So then I call Thomas @ Midwest X
1/9. V. nice man like Matt BTW. Radiator looks great but doesn't
fit. I think I've misplaced some of the original Scorp's mounting
hdwe. If I had the original radiator I could compare things. Damn.
Too many vehicles to work on. Spent the morning replacing "stab"
bar bolts +, on my back, insulated coveralls, laying on snow, in
my driveway on the Explorer. I'll figure out the radiator, eventually.

Hi David,

I'm sure there was a firm your side of the pond offering off the shelf new units for a reasonable price. Failing that, TMH do reconditioned units for 169 GBP if you can't source one. Failing that, I have a unit you're welcome to for postage you can use or use as a basis for a rebuild?? Or if you fancy a swap, I'm after a pair of solid buttresses! ;o))

Let me know.

Cheers

Hey David,

Check the attached images for comparison. This is a Scorp radiator ...which is also an X rad if you take all the Scorp specific stuff off of it and put the X specific stuff on. The basic rad has two large studs at the bottom; each application for the rad uses those studs differently. Are you missing the bottom mounts? If not, in what way is the one you got from Matt not fitting?

I agree w/ John O. I have had both rads side by side, strip off the application unique brackets and the radiators are identical in every way. If you cannot find anything else, try a junkyard "core" from an X1/9 and see if your local shop can rebuild it. You will need the Scorpion unique bottom mounting brackets to install it.

I remember the only difference in the x19 and scorp radiator cores was that the Scorp studs or guide post that the rad slips into are a bit larger than the x19 there for the X19 core fits in fine, All that was needed was a little rubber hose around the studs to hold in place. Actually worked better that the original :)
Bottom line ,,,,,lots of Scorps are running around with X19 radiators in them :)

David
If you are looking to have bottom fixings made up I did a measure up of mine and left the information for Peterdiver under 'screen bag wash' together with a picture.

Thanks again Gents. We've established they're the same rads
[diff mounting]. Xtra thanks to JohnO for the pics. I see now
the lower thru-bolt brackets are bolted to the rad bottom. My
old rad MUST have gone to the shop w/those on. At least now
I can stop tearing my garage apart looking for the brackets.
Now to think of a mounting method. Thanks . . .

This is really a valuable forum. I was confident that the radiators were the same when we sold David the radiator, as they share the identical part number on their respective microfiche. Now I will be able to assist others in the future regarding this issue and the mounting hardware.
