Just published by ACEA, Lancia sales from Jan-Aug 2009 are greater than Alfa (despite the introduction of MiTo)
Lancia have sold 80,297
Alfa have sold 75,912
Fiat have sold 690,120
BTW FGA sales are up 1.1% YTD & they are the ONLY European Group to register an increase in sales this year. The only other group to register a rise is Hyundai
Sales in Europe YTD are down 8.1%
FGA share of the market has grown from 8.1% last year to 8.9% this year! Bravo Fiat Group

wow. I wonder what that is all about. Any chance of a breakdown by model?

sadly i'm no longer able to get any further breakdown of the 2009 figures, i'm a subscriber to Automotive News Europe & they produced figures every month for makes/models on every vehicle sold in Europe, but unfortunetly the paper has been wound up & automotive News (USA) doesn't give the figures for Europe.
however it is amazing new for lancia considering their two gib hitters Ypsilon & Musa are now quite old, leaving Delta the job of increasing sales for the marque!

So Lancia sales are 55% Ypsilon (smallest car) and Alfas are 40% 159, and if you count the 147 as maybe Delta sized, 75% mid and larger.
Seems like the Alfa lineup maybe more profitable, and Lancia is living off the success of the Ypsilon. Take that out, and no Lancia. Surprised to see the Musa doing so well (if any of these numbers are "well").

if you think thats bad, up until Musa came along, Ypsilon, & Y before it accounted for up to 80% of Lancia's sales. I have figures for the last 10 years so i must transfer them onto this laptop & post them here.
FGA don't report financial figures for Fiat, Lancia & Alfa, but it is widely suspected that Alfa doesn't make a profit, & i can't see Lancia doing so either. However i do suspect Lancia probably makes a better return for FGA than Alfa, in simple terms Lancia has so little money thrown its way, its remarkable its still going. Alfa however get updated models, new MiTo, will get new Milano etc...
I think if Lancia got the support Alfa gets, then they could fly.

Alfa Romeo are essentially a separate company. They almost entirely autonomous in terms of resource (they have engineering, styling, marketing, production). Lancia are just an off shoot of Fiat with (I believe) just styling and marketing. Given the amount of platform and drivetrain development money swallowed almost entirely by AR over the last 15 years, I would imagine the Lancia have a far higher contribution /unit sold.
However, the reliance on the Ypsi and Mussa is a bit "eggs all in one (or two) baskets" would be of some concern. It's a pity the '09 figures do not show the contribution of the Delta.
The fact that AR sell in RHD markets (with all the associated costs) giving an available market some 10% odd higher than Lancia should also make for depressing reading for Fiat. I'm not sure what all this say about Lancia, but it says a lot about Alfa.

i personally think Fiat should consider putting their plans to re-introduce Lancia to RHD markets (obviously as soon as the world economy recovers!) back on track. ok so Lancia doesn't have a great name in say UK or Ireland, but in my opinion Alfa's reputation is rubbish, & i honestly feel Lancia could really grow if Fiat do the decent thing, but i think the re-introduction should only happen when they have the new Ypsilon, i'm not sure Delta is the car to take the brand back into RHD markets on it own!
The amount of people on Lancia owners sites in UK & Ireland, who (like me) love the brand surely means there is a future here for Lancia
