The lights in my '84 HPE have suddenly stopped working. They were very dim for a few days and have stopped. Anyone know what may be the cause of this? Could it be a relay or the column switch?

Most electrical problems in an older cars are caused by a bad ground. The dimming would have me suspect a loose ground which finally disconnected, broke off, or perhaps in your case was getting hot enough from resistance that it fried loose.

Good luck, I hate electrical problems more than anything.

I aggree wiuth John, that sounds like it was rusting off and finally broke off, look for rusty/broken gronds under the headlight assemblies primarily.
The column switch is more like turn it on, tail and side markers work but no headlights, turn it off and back on again, headlights work but side markers and tails don't, weird stuff like that
