Timing marks .
Hi Lancia fans !
I have start process of rebuild my stock VX Engine.
2.0 ie engine of my HPE begin to make bearing noise, low oil pressure and other bad things.
Has anyone instructions of timing marks of oil pump shaft? In case of wrong timing , this shaft contact with 2-nd cil. rod.-very bad collision.
Regards!

not really I got it out of the concise workshop manual couldn't find anything better for 2 litre cars, most workshop info published was for the ealy cars

Timing the auxiliary shaft (drives the oil pump) on Vx is the same as standard FIAT or Lancia TC, put the hole in the aux shaft in the 1:00 or 7:00 position relative to the vertical axis of the motor with the crank at TDC.

Better still - take the shaft out and saw the fuel pump lobe off !!

Need to plug the oil way with a grub screw (not difficult ) - but the best thing is that when you change the belt in 20k miles time, you can do it EASILY with the engine in the car without worrying about getting the aux shaft timed correctly !

...better yet, don't monkey with the oil seal plug at all- just grind off the eccentric part of the shaft so the remainder is a smooth shaft in line with the aux shaft centerline, then it will miss the #2 con rod and takes all of five minutes to grind and reinstall. Put a bit of tape over the bearing oil feed to keep crud out and you can have the whole thing in and out in 10 minutes.

(can't take credit for this one- goes to Eddy Tuason in CA)

Can't argue with that ! Wish I was smart enough to think of it !!

having always had the belts on my cars changed my more experienced people this may be a dumb question in context, but i read this as cars with electric fuel pumps still have a fuel pump lobe on an euxillary shaft? why?

Because Lancia/Fiat had a couple of thousand of them kicking around !

It would be great if someone have scaned image of that tool above in 1:1, then it would be easy to print and manufacture one.

Just idea...

The special tool looks like it has pins that fit into the camshaft pulleys to hold them steady. That would be a good thing!! :D

Does anyone have one of these or have ever used it?

HI,

I think Chad (Montehospital) has one of these tools that he hires out (to the UK and Europe at least). I was going to hire it myself in the near future as although my belt has only done 14,000 km, it is 7 years old, and they are under tension with the engine stood still too!

Cheers

That looks like just a timing tool to me, I don't think it would be strong enough to hold the cam pulleys in position when tightening or loosening the bolts. There are actually special tools with teeth that fit into the teeth of the cam wheels to hold them in place.

I think your right fingers, we sell the correct tool, think its even made in italy, quite a bit of kit but bloody exspensive $240 NZ dollars + gst. 8O
Is fully adjustable to suit any twin cam engine with locking teeth.
Trade tools in NZ sell much cheeper ones about $80, not as good but still do the job.
Have seen a pic somewhere of a genuine Fiat or Lancia one, might have been on Guys site or a link somewhere. :?:

Hi ! My VX engine have no hole on auxiliary shaft, only timing mark.
The tool is unusable! :P
I have make interesting experiment- bild my Lancia HPE with VX crankcase , carb head and Thema ie intake manifold. It run on 80 octane fuel this no detonation ( 3 degrees btd ignition timing) and use 9.5 liters/100 km fuel by 120 km/h drive ( I make trip from Moscow to Kostroma 330 km). I thing it is the best money consumptions of all betas!
Now I am prepared Vx blower and plate to mount GM TBI. ( from V6 chevi) .
PS 1 liter of 80 octane fuel cost in Moscow 0.09 EUR
