Hello there,
It's funny to think that I do not know any of you yet.....but here goes.
Stupidly bought a series One....(the last one by the way) Ooooh a long long time ago,Ran it for a bit....ha then noticed a bit of rust ':
Mmmmm .....it's been all down hill very since.

It.....i have not given it a name ...but i did call it a few, stayed in a barn for ....."a little while"....14 yrs or so until finally it had an altercation with a parked caravan....well the clutch would not engauge the petol pedal stuck and the brakes....well we all know about the brakes....and so started Jona's long swim out of the belly of the whale.
Rod from the Monte hospital has been doing a far trade ever since. I was introduced to Rod by the One and only Chad "E" Williams and Chad from the scorpion reproduction's .....Umm a while ago....my dosent time fly.

Since then I have been introduce to produces from clarks produces.... rust remover comes to mind and the frost cataloge....with brilliant produces like undergone. The car well 65% of it has sadly been remove....and been sent to that great big recycling bin in the sky....but dont worry the rest of its good.....the hours of removing the underseal just to replace the entire floor comes to mind.....it's all fun and charactor building.....and I bet your all noding your heads going yep.....and wait for it....there's more....and there was surprise surprise.

But here's my quetion for you lot, striping out the steering colum to look at the gaiter's. clean / respray I thought it would be a good idea to open her up. clean the old grease out and replace with a new dolup of molly grease......this sadly was not to be the case as "OIL" ran out.....Mmmm what goes on, as that would of ment that the gaiter's / Boot's had been acting like seal's for 30 odd years....but nothing surprises me any more with this car. Can any one tell me wether this is correct.....or is this another case of bogit and skarper....well there has been the odd bit of history of with this car.....and if the vehicle did have oil in the steering colum originally......what type of oil would you recommend I replace it with. Much obliged for any ...expert.....or not so expert answers. Good to meet you all. have been taking lot of pic's of this "project"/ money pit /monkey on my back / time machine etc....I will release them ...but later....and mightly bored you will be....they thats the cars all seem to rust and need attention...or the lack of it in the same plases....Oh just befor I forget....Por15 is wonderful stuff.....just dont get it on your hands or cloths, its soaks though and ......."bonds" with you......or there's no end of fun to be had in a bath later....its a case of a little light defoaliation.....pain comes to mind......Now you see "character building...... it's not love you know. Cheer's for listening and if you can help it would be greaty appriciated. My best Peter Diver

Hey Peter,

Welcome aboard!

Guess I need to ask are you talking about the steering column (inside the cabin) or do you mean the steering rack (box, as some might call it)? You mention gaiters acting as seals, so I think you are meaning the rack. The steering rack most definitely takes oil! 5.3 oz (.127 kg) of SAE 90.

Hope that helps.

John O.Ha ....Brilliant.....I am just such a novice ...but yes it is the steering "rack".....not the whole colum. Thank's for the welcome. Quick up-date is that the rack is out of the car stripped / clarked / primed / glosssed / and laquered.....and now thank's to you will be replenished with the correct oil.
That John will be yet one more task to cross off the list in preparation of the shell returning back home...it's currantly being welded by Chris smith at the scar just outside Newent.....an outstanding welder / fabricater...safe hand's......then the Por15 and wax oiling will start...its on a spit so will not be as difficult as the camper....then off to the paint shop.
looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the "mad fool's who also have also traveled this road,.....interesting isnt it. Reading though the odd magazine it would seam that ....now how should i word this.....simular ....yes I think that just about cover's it.....simular experiences seam to have been visited to all......it would also seam that barn's and about 15 yrs and a bit of ....what are you going to do with that rusting hulk of a thing, play's a part into the finally getting down to the nut's and bolt's of it all, because you have to be brave enough or / please see earlier disciption of the above to not only start this vocation ....and it soon turn's into one ....but steady enough for the prize....to finish the project and drive the dame thing ....as on some rainy cold "brasic" day's there a really better thing's to be doing and so it takes on the mantel of hunting down that alousive grail....but this I will say....it's at least now possiable because of the standard of replacement part's .....that just werent available some year's ago so there's to the Monte Hospital. So good luck with yours. Pete ....who just so happen's to be a Diver
