View Full Version : Thought I was on fire...

:eek::eek::eek:
OK, so now I have a new problem.
Over the weekend it was that my brand new right rear caliper starting leaking badly so that had to be swapped out.
Now, the new VX gearbox seems to want to blow out the dipstick and spew oil all over my engine compartment whenever I rev it much past 5,000 RPM. This results in a very embarrassing situation with large volumes of smoke pouring out of the rear while doing tuning runs. Definitely not acceptable.
I'm certain that it's not overfilled with oil and I have a brand new O-ring on the dipstick.
The only thing I can think might be the problem is that maybe the top case vent is clogged. I'll try to check it with some compressed air to see if that's the problem.
Any other suggestions?

So, when I pressurize the gearbox through the dipstick hole, I get no venting through the top vent.
Does anyone know how the Beta vent can be removed? It appears to be pressed in instead of threaded like that on the Scorpion gearbox.

- Hi DJ,
If it's a Vx box, then the vent cover should be plastic, which you can simply pull off. Go for it!!:D

Yes, the plastic cover pops right off. Unfortunately, the actual venting device is in a sleeve that's pressed into the top of the box.
I want to get that out and see if it can be made to work. Otherwise, I want to completely remove it and install the one from my Scorpion box.

Can't help there I'm afraid DJ - I can go and look at some of the cases I have and I will check my box before it goes in - I certainly don't want the same problems!
Does the Haynes book of lies of tech manual have a cross section drawing showing it?

Well, I think I have this solved.
The Scorpion gearbox has a very large hole in the top with a threaded vent. The VX box has much smaller pressed-in tube with a snap-on plastic cap so replacing it with the Scorpion piece would be a bigger job than I want to do.
Looking down into the VX vent you can see an orifice at the bottom which appears to be a slightly loose flat piece with a small hole in the center. Underneath the orifice was a solid piece of casting and there were apparently no opening in it because I could get no air to pass when pressurizing the box with air.
It looks as though it is was designed to have a lip at the bottom of the hole where the orifice plate sits, then the tube is pressed in to hold it into place.
Because I couldn't think of any better course of action I decided to drill a hole in the metal underneath the orifice plate. When I did, the bit went through it immediately so I suspect that the casting simply left a thin bit of metal over the hole which was never cleaned up.
Now, when I pressurize it I get good flow through the vent. Unfortunately, it also whistles! I'm hoping that the internal pressure won't be such that it causes a whistle when driving. If so, I'll be drilling a bigger hole soon.
But then, maybe I could just use it as a shift indicator... I wonder how I would calibrate that.
FWIW, the Haynes book only shows the Scorpion/Montecarlo-style threaded vent.

Lol! I suppose it will save you winding the window down when wanting to show appreciation of the female form... Just gotta get the revs right!
Andrew.
