View Full Version : Adding A/C

Hello all,
I've decided that Florida summers are a bit much without A/C on my 76.
I do have all the original AC hardware minus the non-rotary compressor.
So here's the big question- I understand using modern compressors work, but:
Do you use the AC bracket that comes with the Scorpion (large cast iron) or is it better to source the late Beta (aluminum) bracket?
Also feel free to post, anyone who has successfully AC-ed their MonteScorp.
Thank you in advance :)

Both of my Scorpions use the Beta compressor and brackets. I believe it's a two piece aluminum / cast iron arrangement. I also run the Beta twin v belts which of course required the Beta crank pulley. These are both running Beta FI; don't know first hand if there'd be any complications with a carb setup.

From Vintage Air, you can get an adapter that bolts the Sanden onto the old steel York bracket. Get a Sanden with a multi groove pulley, also from Vintage Air. The SD508 with most pulleys runs about $200 last I checked.

Beaver: My black Scorpion had an upgraded AC system that is now running around Israel so if you want some pictures of what works well, email me and I will forward the condencer and compressor pictures.:) Also you might start looking around for a good window tinting company for Florida Sun shine. :)

Hi. I think it is markalan that wants the stuff and you are to be credited as I remember your description and pictures of your Black car you sent me when I got mine going over a year ago. I agree about the tinting, as mine in California without tinting is an oven even with very cold air coming out the vents.

sorry about that Beaver :) the point is I got some istallation pictures I can forward but havent got onto the site yet, some day when DJ settles into a idiot proof gallery I will do it hehe.
mean while email me and I will forward allen@lofland.net
One point I would make here. IF I where to do it again, I would rip out the OEM evaorator heater core box and start all over again with a Vintage box. After upgrading the entire system to its max I discovered the real problem with the Scorpion is , its antiquated blower box. The supply air s location exiting at the windshield :( really poor idea and the blower cage just inadeguate. But thats another story, with the new condencer, evaporator, and compressor and lots of other little up grades we got a pretty good system that would work well up to 100 degrees in Kansas as long as you DONT drive right into the sun load at noon :)

I've decided to wait until all Lancia owners become Gen-X +. That way I'll have users who know how to turn on their computers.
But seriously, if you send me the pictures I'll put them into a Gallery for you if you can't figure it out, Allen. I freely admit that, while the PhotoPost gallery is extremely capable, it's user interface certainly isn't what I expect of it.

Allen, that would be straight up like a rocket .
Your car must have gotten even faster after the time I drove it :D.

Well, it WAS pretty fast. It just didn't stop very well (until he installed the Whoa brakes).

Thank you all for the suggestions. As always Allen I knew you had it nailed down, I did find your Scorpion for sale pics page the other day. And now that I know the company that makes that bracketing that is fantastic.
So mounting the compressor can really be as simple as asking this Vintage Air place about an adapter bracket for a York to Sanden 508? Is there a particular York compressor that I should ask for.... or do they know what a Lancia Scorpion is?
One more question: I am thinking the Chrysler controls for the HVAC system are kinda suck... any suggestions for replacing them?

A Sanden 504 and the special 504 to York piston bracket adapter. Contact Allen Lofland for specifics on other bits.
BTW, Is this Sr., or Jr.? If Jr, best regards to your Dad, if Sr, Hi Gary!
