Upon starting my car (1976, #1087) after the winter rest (had the battery out) there was a new noise, and one that didn't change pitch with the engine. It's quite loud inside the cabin and out. Perhaps coming from the fuel tank area. Could this be a warning that my fuel pump is about to strand me somewhere? How hard is this part to get/install?
Cheers to all- I've been lurking lately.

Definitely could be the pump. The pump is normally mounted on the "firewall" behind the engine and just to the right of the fuel tank. What's the noise sound like?
Unlikely to find an original style pump but numerous options are available. I'd suggest that you stay away from the solenoid-style pump which are noisy and annoying.
Personally, I like the Carter geroter style pump as a replacement and I just happen to have a brand "newsed" one I'll let go if you want it. It looks like the attached picture. They are very quiet and well-regarded.
This one honestly only ran on my car for about one or two minutes, at most before I realized that I had to remove the engine again to figure out the noise in the bell housing of the new gearbox. :( In the interim I also decided to install Megasquirt EFI so I had to go back to the FI fuel pump.
Send me a PM if you're interested in it.

It could also be a vac leak whistle - I'd jump the pump direct with the ignition off and listen to it to confirm before ripping anything out. If the pump sounds normal, check any vacuum caps on the inlet manifold, don't forget the sides and bottom.
Normally most other sounds will vary w/engine speed, with a few notable exceptions like the heater, etc. Sometimes sqealing belts/tensioner bearings are tricky, they usually make noise at idle and disappear temporarly off-idle.

I'd go w/D.J.'s offer. Pierce Manifold sells both flavors. The box
one on the right is a bolt-on, fits the factory firewall perfectly.
Tried mine yet no, recommend it, not as yet. Just a thought.

And I'll attest to if DJ says it's new, it's new, he has helped me out!
And I bet it's the pump too from your "singing" description, or the remains of the neighbors cat rubbing on something! LOL
