OK, so I do actually know what it is. But why?

Check out the attached picture of a Monte engine bay from an eBay Italy ad and see if there's something that looks odd to you.

FWIW, there are currently 3 Montes (1 S1 and 2 S2s) for sale on eBay Italy with asking prices ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 Euros.

A number of things really, apart from the obvious gearbox cooling fan! The mail water rail out of the top of the head has been capped off as well as the return on the right hand side, which won't do much for engine cooling and may account for the fan?? There's also some very odd wiring/piping at the bottom of the pic - got an ebay link DJ??

If this is an example of the owners handywork, I hope he hasn't been 'improving' the brakes!!! I'd run a mile from this one!!!

Call me nut's but I think he installed a 2ND gas tank? Possibly
where the CAT cavity exists? Monte or otherwise. That yellow
hose along the left cyl. head terminus seems to be heading to
a gas tank connection I've never seen. That fan I dunno. Maybe
some oddball idea if the stock tank perculates on the firewall,
then a 2ND cooler gas tank would funtion? His oddball install
is as weird as my prognostication/explanation. I thought only
Americans bastardized Scorpions? No doubt this will raise a
comment from Will.

Wow! I hadn't noticed the fan... I was just talking about the air filter appearing to be installed sideways. :)

At first I thought that the loop of wiring or small pipe at the bottom right near the thermostat was the old catalytic convertor thermocouple. But Montes didn't have cats so I've no idea what that is either.

Here's the eBay link (http://cgi.ebay.it/LANCIA-Beta-Montecarlo-tenuta-da-amatore-perfetta_W0QQitemZ200318726027QQcmdZViewItemQQptZA utomobile_IT?hash=item200318726027&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1385%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318).

I hadn't tried to read the text of the ad before but it says "...in perfect documented order..." LOL!

I can't imagine how a fuel tank mounted just above the silencer could possibly be cooler.

It's possible that what looks to be a second gas line is actually for a propane set-up, with the ability to switch between gas and propane. That wouldn't be all that uncommon in Italy; I've seen a couple of Fulvias with propane set-ups, at least one of which was dual plumbed to be switchable.

I you look at the very bottom left, there appears to be the corner of an oil cooler.
