View Full Version : Note to self: When re-installing clutch...

...make sure the timing pointer isn't positioned too far outwards.

Some of you know that after installing my new VX gearbox I had a knocking noise inside the clutch housing upon first start-up. This is the main reason my progress with Lucia has been stalled for a couple of months.

The last darn thing I wanted to do (or had time to do) was pull the engine again. But I really had no choice. I finally got the lump out tonight and here's pictures of what I found.

There was a small telltale scuff mark inside the clutch housing.

Further investigation resulted in finding a matching scuff mark on the timing pointer.

I loosened the bolts and was able to move the pointer downward a good bit. It should be enough to clear the housing now.

Aaaargh! I hate this kind of stuff.

Bummer. Re-dos are the worst. Radiators are my nemesis. After
my LBZ's radiator re-do I accidentally put one of the lower bolts
thru the fins. Didn't leak until I had everything put back [A/C too]
& re-filled. Back out it came. My Scorp's radiator took a month
to start leaking after it's re-do, re-install, re-fill. Back out it came.
Still out. After these fiascos I'm thinking of a new radiator for the
Scorp. [Obert] to avoid going thru this misery again. AHHHHHH !!!

FWIW I'm not getting the pics in the above post (assuming they are properly tagged) I can see them in your photo album, but nothing appears in the post, no broken link icon or anything. I think we might have a bug here. Nothing else is running on my machine that should interfere and I've slid the window around my monitors and reloaded a bunch of times to no avail.(IE7)

Hmmm. Works fine on all my computers with all different browsers.

Don't know what's going on. Tags are provided by the system in the album module so they are correct.

Apparently, this is an IE7 thing. I was able to recreate it on one of my Windows computers. If you're not logged in (or the system thinks you're not logged in), IE7 won't show pictures in the new albums because I was not allowing "Unregistered/Not Logged In" users to view albums. It worked fine for Safari and Firefox but not IE7. I've changed that setting now so please give it a try again.

The current portal I use has some issues with integration into the forum log-in system. Sometimes you log in but it doesn't think you are and you need to do it again. This is why I'm planning to move to a different portal. This summer vBulletin will introduce new portal/CMS features in their next major version so I'll just hang on until then.

In the mean time, if you haven't cleared your cookie cache in a while, it will probably help to do this.

Is now working, DJ: System had my avatar and said "Welcome Will" in the personal menu but I can't tell you if it "thought" I was logged in because it's been a bit idiosyncratic before.

IMO it might be preferable to make baby steps ironing out the wrinkles rather than large changes aimed at new features, etc. I'm a little concerned with things like the "social networking" features, I certainly don't want to start getting things mixed up and interconnected between forums when PHPBB software starts "talking" to each other and exchanging metadata and whatnot.

I like my anonymity and while I know some people just love their myspace and facebook, I reckon I already have plenty of people whom I wasn't crazy about 20 or 30 years ago that suddenly want to "reconnect". I don't want to be a "friend of a friend of a friend", and I don't know whether I'm the oddball or what, but I really don't want to deal with the whole awkwardness of "friend requests" or any of that BS. Again, I can't speak for everybody, but I'm careful to not even use the same handle or email addy across many forums because I don't want my friends on "HappyOrchidGrowersGroup" to recognize me on "NaziSkinHeadHateFoum" (just kidding, of the names of course)

Anyway, I don't mean that to sound negative, I'm just trying to offer some feedback. Site is great BTW.

Will,

The left side login menu box with avatar is part of the portal software and "bridges" to the vBulletin (not PHPBB) forum software. At times this bridge is apparently shakey. I've been looking for a replacement portal for some time but haven't found anything to my complete liking yet.

As for the social groups thing, I understand your concerns. However, like the new photo albums, they are actually part of the core vBulletin software and are quite solid. I played with them a good bit before opening them up to the general populace here so I'm satisfied with their security and functionality. You have complete control over your participation in them so you shouldn't have any issues with them whether or not you choose to participate in them.

It's really just another part of the site where folks can interact more socially (off-topic discussions, coordinate get-togethers, conduct club business, etc.) without it being part of the general forums. I can't imagine anyone getting miffed if you don't want to join their group.

Besides, we all know you're anti-social. (Just KIDDING!)

Your login must be working OK. Some people have trouble with this and others have none.

It's an aggravating thing for me but I'll get it sorted eventually. It mostly rears it's head for folks trying to use the downloads module which is currently part of the portal software, not a core vBulletin module.

DJ, don't think it's an IE7 issue.

I have had intermittant cases of not seeing pictures inside posts, and a couple instances where I logged in and then discovered that I wasn't. And I'm on Firefox (and occasionally Chrome).

The glitches are minor, and intermittant. So I haven't been able to figure out if it's caused by something on my machines (laptop and desktop) or by a butterfly in Norway.

Appreciate all you do to keep the forum going!

DJ,
Same thing happened to me when I installed my VX transaxle. Mine did not make a noise at idle, but it did at 7,000 RPM! It sounded like somthing broke and flew around inside the bell housing. Which is exactly what happened. This was after changing out the Transtad locking differential that broke 2 days earlier. Man was I pissed. I took a look through the timing mark inspection hole and saw that the timing mark pointer on the flywheel had been torn off. I pulled the lower sheet metal shield off the bell housing and no metal bits in the bottom of the bellhousing, so I said screw it and drove to the Mira event in Oregon. I have not felt like pulling the transaxle since, so I use the front timing mark instead. Luckily the entire pointer was not torn off only the "arm" the portion. The portion that has the pressure plate bolts holding it on is still there.
