View Full Version : What does the number 2 stand for?

Greetings,

The other day on a Scorpion I noticed that there is a rather large "2" cast into the engine block. It is located down on the lower left hand side of the block while viewing the engine from the rear area of the car. This 2 is clearly visible while the car is up on a lift and with the protective covers (aka "belly pans") removed. It is not far from where the oil pan bolts to the block.

Does anyone know what this particular 2 stands for in FIAT nomenclature?

I don't know the real answer, but it's fairly common in foundry operations to have the patterns contain an identifier, so if QC picks up a fault it can be traced back quickly and checked against the originating pattern.

Thanks for the reply. A friend of mine examined a FIAT 124 engine block for me today and he noted that it had the number 14 cast into it at about the same location. So the 2 is probably a QC designation as you suggest. I was thinking perhaps it meant 2L, but I understand the displacement is cast in the block higher up, closer to the head. My Scorpion is tucked away in winter storage at this time so I can't just run out to the garage and check.

BTW: On a Scorpion engine block just where is the displacement amount cast (or is it cast in at all)? IRIC the name "LANCIA" is cast in the block somewhere as well, I think I saw this once while beneath the car. Was I seeing things?

On a Scorpion engine block just where is the displacement amount cast into the block? Besides the overall height of the engine, the size of the T-belt cover, motor mounts ect... how can one tell the difference between a 2L vs a 1.8L bock?

The displacement is not cast into the block on any of them. What is cast into the block is the serial, the engine series number, and Lancia or FIAT.

You can cross reference the engine series number to a list to find the displacement (I started such a chart a while back, OK, years back, and Pete Angel I think it is over on Mirafiori has one for the FIAT blocks.)

On a Scorpion, the engine series is 186AS6XX.... for example.

Brian Long's book "Beta: A Collector's Guide" has a good appendix of series numbers.

There are two preferred physical ways to determine displacement. The first involes a careful look at the height of the deck from other distinguishing features. I don't trust this method as well as the second, which is measuring the stroke. You can put a straight coat hanger wire or welding rod down the spark plug hole and measure the stroke. The bore is the same for 1.8L and 2L. the 2L has 10mm increased stroke.
