View Full Version : Dome Lighting Opererations?

I'm trying to sort out my interior lighting situation and would like to know how they are supposed to work the right way. As of now, each dome light will only turn on/off individually by pressing the dome light lens in/out. Since the lights also didn't come on with either door opened, I would find it odd for both door switches to be bad but I will remove them tomorrow to check.

BTW, where're the best source to get new dome lights? I would think the X1/9 have a similar set up?

Thanks!

IIRC they're 3-way switches: switched to door buttons, manually on
and/or manual off altogether. Lense gets "sticky" w/age, a TINY dab
of oil on the hinge pin & ball bearing may restore it's full rocker
switch operation. Dunno about X 1/9 swapability.

Hi David,

Thanks for answer.... looks like one curiosity solved: Manual on/off on one switch should turn on/off both lights. So looks like my light assembly is old and not making good contact. Now on to the door switch operation...

BTW, there are 2 door switches on the driver side, which one goes to the dome light and what's the other one for?

I can't answer the question about the 2nd door switch, but as is always discussed whenever electrical gremlins pop up, cleaning all contacts--including the grounds--is always the best place to start. In fact, bad grounds and bad contacts are often the only problem.

Julian I think D.J.'s gonna punish me for this answer. Open
the driver's door, both lights come on behind your head [s] =
two door jam buttons. Open the pass. side door = one switch,
pass. light on behind his/her head that side. As D.J. advises
ALWAYS look for proper grounding. IMHO these cars were
unduly complex when it came/comes to some of their wiring.
As always good luck, keep @ it!

Second push switch on driver's door (if I remember correctly) was to make a buzzer go off if the key was still in the ignition and the door was open.

If your rocker lamp assemblies are bad I have about half a dozen good ones from parted out Scorpions. Email me if needed
