I finally got a chance to get away last w/e and did a trip through the western slopes of the Rockies in CO. I had hoped to cross them and see Pete A. and D.J. but they had other plans. In preparation for the trip I rejetted the 34 DATR down 1 size on the primary throat idle and main jets. After I got there I had some starting issues and jetted one additional size smaller on the idle which seemed to correct the problem.
The late Sept/early Oct. weather is great and if one takes the route 550 through Ouray and Silverton either north or south they chance catching the fall change of colors. Entire mountain valleys that are usually shades of green turn into every shade of yellow and orange imaginable. The 25 mile stretch between these old mining towns is a mass of colors starting with all shades of red ,green, yellow and orange layered from the bottom to the top with some of the highest peaks still covered with snow. There are many pullout places and spectactular views.
The performance mods to the engine (compression, cam & carb) were certainly noticible especially the torque climbing hills. The highest mountain passes are in excess of 10,000 feet . Fuel mileage was outstanding with 28 on the way there and 29 on the way back with lots of stretches averaging 70 mph+.
Anyone considering a fall motoring trip in western U.S. should consider this beautiful drive.
