The ol' blue beast ate her alternator and power steering belts today. Anybody out there have a part number or cross reference? $30 for the alternator belt from Vick Auto seems kind of steep.

Like the pimply kid at Autozone would ask, what's the Beta's year and engine size? European Betas used about three different size engines.USA spec. Betas used different types of belts on various years. For instance my 75 has a cogged a/c belt that runs the a/c compressor only,I believe some later models used a v-belt that ran both a/c and p/s.

Uh?
Ya gotta tape measure don't ya?! run it around the pullies, then buy a belt about an inch or so longer than the measurement you get so it allows for adjustment.........thats what I do, you do NOT in AMNYWAY need a special belt, it's just a common V-Belt, you should take a piece of it in to get the correct V depth if you have any of it left

IIRC the PS belt is an (a)L section belt, not a V. On mine it was, anyway, I think. Not sure since the menengitis thing and my full-time crack cocaine habit and drinking binges, but IIRC it was an L.

Here. I'll contribute....

International sold me part number 15515000 as an alternator belt for a 79-82 Lancia. It's a Continental 10X1100. It is hanging in my office because (if I recall correctly) it was too long and I never bothered to return it. I think that what I ended-up doing ws taking the old ones to the LAPS and matching them up. My car is a 1981 2.0L FI car.

Thanks, Paul.

Rumor has it that you've been around Lancia circles for some time but at least some of us here don't know much about you. Since you're relatively new here, why don't you tell us a little about yourself? ;)

Thanks for asking, DJ. I have owned Lancias since about 1990. I used to be really involved with the club stuff (FLU, ALC and LMC) but have tapered off. I have a '74 X1/9 that I restored and it has sort of been my main squeeze for the past few years (plus the eight that it took me to restore it). My Lancia needs some cosmetics now but it is still a decent car.

I watch the forum now and then but don't post too much. I tend to take things the wrong way and get in arguments with people I know I would get along with great face-to-face ;)

As far as the belts go, I can look at what is on my car if you'd like. V-belts are pretty standardized so I can't see why the vendors would charge so much for one.

Since things are smoothed over now, I'll chime in with what I know.
Paul's a great guy, he was honestly the first person not to talk negitivly about my good 82 Zagato when I contacted him in 1998 for help thru another FLU members recomendation, and also the first to help point me in the right directions to get to where I am with them today, He was also the most helpful person in informing me of what to expect out of the Betas when I got into these darn cars, so I never ran into to many surprises with them. I have stood and conversed a few times face to face with him, once in his home, and always enjoy visiting with him.

Knowing what little I do know about Paul and DJ, I was about to email them both myself as I knew DJ's remark was in jest and Paul missed the goofy icon, and DJ didn't know who he was. ha ha ha, obviously a TOTAL miss understanding and I am extreemly happy it's resolved

Truely, if anyone is a Beta "killer", (as Paul took offens to), I believe I probably hold the current record for the most stripped cars and parts sold off on eBay! (I quit counting at 23), (I could use the transmission BTW Paul, I think I hurt a 1st-2nd syncro the other day), LOL. However in my own defense, the cars I stripped had unsalvagable rusted Ohio Michigan Indiana bodies along with all the other mechanical, electrical and trim problems, Therfore, parts from those unsalvageable cars saved others I was fixing up as well as helping out the folks around the world I sold parts to as I always sold cheap....well, almost always. They also kept my famly in a home when I had no income what so ever due to being fired for insobordination because I was going thru the 4 spinal fusion surgeries and couldn't work 40 plus hours a week, (that was the actual reason the company I worked for, for 11 years, used that also excluded me from drawing unemployment), and fighting for social security benifits, that took 5 years of no income other than what the Betas generated, so I wasn't selling anything that I didn't have to sell to solely survive, keep a roof over my kids heads and restore other cars.

During that time, Paul even helped out my family by giving me and almost delivering to my home a HUGE pickup truck full of parts, how's that for being a helpful Lancisti I ask?!

He is also somewhat of a detail nut like myself and I have a lot of respect for anyone like that! LOL

May thanks for the help over the years Paul!

JIM "Beta" KILLER !!!!!

You have a new nickname!!!! And, excuses AS IF feeding those brats of yours is better than fixing a car built by cheese-eating surrender monkeys instead of one of the Axis nations, you know, the only three countries that can build a car that's not a POS! :) LOL and I was just coming over here to help DJ rough up the FNG and they kissed and made up before I could arrive! Now I will have to take my internet agressions out on someone else!

Thanks for the added context, Jim. Paul and I eventually realized we have more in common than differences.

I completely understand that some cars just can't reasonably be saved. I myself am a "Spider-killer" having bought a 124 Spider a couple years back that just couldn't be saved without me first winning the lottery. :'( I hate to see such things happen but am happy that they always provide a lot of good parts that help to keep others on the road.

Thank you for that, Jim! You are very kind. I remember your visit with your wife and daughter. She (your daugher) is probably a teenager now, no? My wife and I were really struggling at that time with her health and I probably was too distracted to really be a very good host but I'm glad you remember if fondly.

I never wanted to cause any trouble here or try to impress anyone. It was a misunderstanding that escalated out of proportion. DJ and I both apologized to each other. I just want to help people that want to run these cars. Like you, I'm not trying to make a ton of money.

As for the transmission. A guy called me last night and wanted parts to convert a low mileage automatic Zagaot into a 5-speed. The first thing I thought was that I might have given all those parts to Keller! Turns out I have the gearbox, the shifer, the rod from the shifter into the engine bay, the pedals and there is at least some bits still on the subframe. I'll have to go through my boxes to see what else I have. He's coming over this weekend so I think the 5-speed will be taken, Jim. If I don't have everything could I put this guy in touch with you for whatever I'm missing?

Paul

Sure you can give him my contatc info, but I am not sure what all I have still myself from that last car for a trans swap

I had a guy up in northern Ohio somewhere that was talking about doing that recently, I wonder if this is the same one

Probably end up taking mine apart for repair if it turns out to be internal, (haven't check anything out real close yet though, been too busy on this old house again), so no biggie.

Audrey is 10 now, just started cheerleading. We have another daughter now too, Kim is 3 and will be 4 Dec 18th.......we took steps to keep it at two, with most of my friends my age having kids graduating colledge or having grandbabies, I figured I better quit while I was ahead! .....or got any further behind! LOL

They charge so much because they can, since it's prolly a pretty high-markup item (easy money), and most folx who'd buy one from a mailorder vendor prolly presume they need some "rare/odd/special" type of belt the local stores wouldn't carry, and they either don't realize they can just take the old belt in to a local store and have it matched up, or just don't want to bother with that hassle, or are ordering other items and adding a spare belt to their order while they're at it on impulse "just in case" to economize on shipping and perhaps not looking at the price very critically. It's a case of "what people are willing to pay" and "the price of convenience".
