View Full Version : Steering Rack Rebuilding

As I continue the restoration on #221, I've noticed that the steering rack boots are essentially torn off, exposing the innards of the rack. I'm pretty sure that this was the case when I had the car sandblasted, so it's likely that the rack has debris internally.

What are the recommendations on dismantling and cleaning the rack assembly? Is it worthwhile or possible, or should I look at a replacement?

Hi Randy,

iirc - like most things, it comes apart pretty easy - the trick is getting it back together! You can buy new racks off the shelf, and for you lucky left hand drive folks, you can also get a quick rack too! MH as ever is your friend here, where you can also get all the other bushings and boots necessary for a rebuild.

If you suspect debris in there - get it out and see what you have, especially if you've had it sand blasted and you know the boots weren't complete!

Good luck!

The rack is easy to take apart to the point where it can be cleaned and flushed out. The boots are easy to replace, but to replace the bushing on the end of the rack (and actually remove the rack from the housing) requires unscrewing the ball/socket from one end of the rack, which looks to be easier said than done.

Is the X1/9 rack the same as the Monte? Seems like I heard the boots are the same.

Yes and yes.

The X1/9 rack will fit but you need to use the inner tie rod ends from the Scorpion.

I believe the ratio is also different between the X and Scorpion. I have also heard that later Xs used a 128 part, which is slowere still.

Fit, yes... Same rebuild parts, yes... Same, almost and would definitely work. As noted, the inner balljoints are longer on the Scorpion and (of course) uses different (shorter) outer tie rod ends.
