I was just bored enough this morning to figure out how to wire a relay in the starter circuit in my 81 Lancia. I have been dreading this since Jim Keller and I talked about the problem some time ago. My Lancia showed early signs of the problem, so I tore into the wiring change. It takes about 5 bucks for those with no spare relays or wires ends and 1/2 hour to change the curcuit. Best thing is that most of the work is already done. The starter curcuit red wire goes to the aux fuse/relay box on the D/S inner fender and comes out red/black. Look in the aux-box and you will see a white relay blank in the left rear corner. This is where the red-red/black change occurs. This blank can be removed and replaced with a relay after moving two wires and adding two more inside the aux box. One may also jumper + 12vdc to a terminal under the blank to start the car altogether bypassing the ignition switch in case of emergency.

If anyone is interested, I can write up detailed instructions and post them or email them to you.

The best parts of the fix are that the only change is the addition of a relay where there should have been one to start with (Looks perfectly stock) and that there is now a fuse protecting the circuit.

Gotta run and find something else to fiddle with.

Hello,

Interesting. Could you please mail details?drawing?
mail me at tu@stork.no

Putting relay between headlights and switch! it's a must in Norway since we must use lights all day.

Best regards
Tore

Dan - if possible, a few pictures would certainly be useful please. I'm planning to do this mod myself and, although it's relatively simple, pictures would reduce the amount of wheel re-invention required. Suspect that my VX wiring is a little different from your car though. We'll see.

Tore - the headlight relay mod is different. I'll try and find a picture of my setup and e-mail it to you.
