View Full Version : multi-coloured noseband

I had a thought! Yeah I know, can be dangerous!!! I was looking at the separate pieces that make up my noseband - 1 piece is knackered and needs replacing and the whole lot needs painting.
Anyhow - I don't think the bumper I have will look great colour-coded, so I think I'm going to go for black. However, I quite lilke the look of red noseband corners with a black centre.
What do you guys think??

Well, I read it and I thought, "Naaaahhhh"... Then I looked and it and I thought, "Hmmm, actually...".
I like it.

My sentiments exactly! I only put them on 'cos it's what I had to hand and still looked better than the one piece item I have and then looking at it, it started to grow on me! :D I think I'll keep it that way - painted properly of course!!

It is indeed not as bad as I expected, but if it was my car I would paint the top piece too.

I think all of it needs to be red just to give it a more modern integrated look. I think this was one of the initial faults in the design of the car to have that black-ish noseband...

IMHO, it's too disjointed as is. I think you've got to go one way or the other--all red or all original.

That's the great thing about these cars and the forum - everyone has an opinion! I'm going with the dis-jointed look for now and see how it goes - I can always spray in the top at a later date if I go off it.
Longest run in the car this morning - 10 miles and all ok, will take it on a longer trip a bit later today and see how I get on!
Cheers

With the hood and engine lid black too, a la Abarth, that would be hot, IMO.

My front hood's paint is bad enough that I've considered this option. It would really accentuate the profile of the car....

That'd visually tie the nosebad in with the front valence better; it's probably look really good. And if you've got to paint it anyway...

It would be interesting to mock one up and see - but aren't they matt black areas? Not sure I'd go with that, but I'd love to see one! ;o)

check photo albums member/will/scorpion,
You'll note my engine lid is SG black, there also happens to be a pretty good picture of the lid-lift you were looking for specs on, when I first built it and it wasn't finished/painted yet- all of which makes it easier to see how it fits together.
You might try saran wrap on the hood of the car and dust it with a spray bomb for "mock-up"

Hi Will - thanks for that - it's much clearer in that shot! I take it the brace on the engine cover was fabricated up yourself? One question though - what is the black knob for?
I have 'won' a set of gas struts from eBay, so now need to get meself some aluminium angle and sheet to have a bash meself. btw - what fixings did you use on the bottom bracket?
I have absolutely no idea what your second paragraph meant though! What's saran wrap, and what the hell is a spray bomb???????

Well, I like the mono colored look myself, I think making the nose and tail pieces black make the Scorpion chunky looking were the mono seems a bit more sleek and sporting. I attached a few shots of how I did #441, (the one the guy I was forced to sell it to totaled driving it drunk), including how we painted up the two piece removable double bubble top in place of the factory rag top and how we cleaned up the engine bay a tad by removing some brackets and such I was no longer using. The two piece top allowed it to be removed and stored in the front trunk were as the one piece bubble tops, like I installed on #339 I had previous to this one had to be removed and left at home. There was no place for a spare with the mods to the engine was the only negitive, but how often do you really get a flat on the road these days? those are pretty rare

Wow Jim, you must have been distraut when you found out that some numpty destroyed all that hard work! I'm surprised you didn't go see him to teach him the error of his ways - or just to let him know what a twat he is!! Looks like it was a lovely car - If mine was gold I'd probably go with the 'mono' look - don't ask me why, I can't put my finger on it! But the red does need to be contrasted.
Waiting for a quote now for taking the dent out and the noseband, which should them give me the impetous to sort out the bumpers!

I have to say I prefer the "black-out" trim bits. Especially on red
or white. When it comes to the black sidebands/accent stripes,
dunno. Maybe a few but not the whole kit. Looks too "bizzy".
My '81 Coupe sacrificed itself to save me YEARS ago. Yes similiar
circumstance. Stupid me, great car. But I turned around & bought
a new '82 LBZ to replace her. Yup long, long time ago. I guess sub-
consciously I'm redeeming myself for totaling the Coupe by "saving"
[restoring] the '82 LBZ & '76 Scorp I have. And I do mean "saving"
'cause they both were borderline when I bought them. Borderline as
in flip a coin. Heads woulda been a parts car, tails a restoration.
They're being restored . . .

LOL!!
Being the sick person that I am, I've been holding off on this one and waiting to see if Darren would understand the Saran Wrap reference. :D
Darren, it's simply one brand of plastic food wrap here in the US. It's what you good folks in the UK would call "cling film" from the pantry.
"Spray bomb" is really just a term for an aerosol paint can.

As you're soliciting opinions here's mine. It just doesn't work for me. I don't think it flows well visually at all.
I'm a big fan of the original trim concept using the dark gray semi-flat color rather than black. The black provides too much contrast IMHO.
I also don't really care for painting the nose and bumpers body color. Especially if the stripe is omitted. I think the car looks too short and "stubby" without the stripe.
But that's just one fool's opinion. 8)

WHOOPS! Sorry, Darren! Just for that I'll throw you a bonus:
You can spray graffitti (I think they have that in the UK) onto the "cling film" on a flat surface and cut out around the overspray with a razor blade. Then you call roll it up in paper and tuck it away for the next car show. Then lightly dust your buddy's (that's mate to you) car with a spray bottle of water and apply your cling film "decal". It looks incredibly realistic because the base color of the car shows through. You can leave the can of spray paint on the ground near the car for extra effect. But, you had better be standing by with a cold beer when your friend finds out he's been tricked!

I agree w/D.J. that black is too contrasting but for some reason
seemingly almost every PO painted them black. The factory grey
is preferable, a much "softer" contrast to the eye. My taste as
well.

To introduce yet another option: paint the entire lower part black, a lá Ferrari 512BB and the 037 prototype. I believe there are also pictures around here that show how that looks on the Scorpion, I quite like it.

BTW, there's also a functional reason to go for the matte-black hood finish a la Abarth, as Will suggested -- it eliminates glare reflecting off the hood!
In fact, I've lately considered doing just that on my white Zagato, as the afternoon sunset drivetime here in Tucson is just hell on my retinas if I'm ever heading West. The factory paint job's become tired and tatty enough by now that I wouldn't feel bad about "ruining" the original finish -- already too late for that!

Not so much of a problem this side of the pond as we don't get the same amount of sunshine! ;o) I have a spare bonnet knocking around, so maybe I'll try one out and see how it looks - we are talking front luggage cover rather than engine cover though right?

I will offer a couple pics of the paint "style" I decided to go with on my last 77. I think it stretched the car and made it look a bit more proportional than the original (US Cars). I painted the front and rear valances, the noseband, and the little caps that are normally black above the B pillar. I think painting that cap did wonders for the 'flow' of the design.

looks great and definitely works with a hard top - not sure it would with a spyder though - unless the hood were body coloured too

Looks nice! I looks (imho) much better with those black parts on the bumper compared to completely color coded Euro bumpers.
