ok chaps, opinions please!

I have a bit of a dilemma and would welcome your comments. As you are probably aware, I have been working my tail off, trying to gett the car on the road for this coming weekend to go to the Tech Forum. I have fitted the 40's but there's no way the car will drive unless it's tuned. The tuner (Tom Airey) can't do anything with the car until next Tuesday at the earliest, so my choices are:

1. Leave the car at home and concentrate on getting it on the road from next week.

2. Take the carbs off and put the standard carb on it for the weekend, and hopefully I can set this one up to run properly instead. The hassle is obviously doing 2 carb swaps where none are necessary and as the fuel pressure guage I have is a dud, there's no guarantee I can get the other carb set up correctly.

How easy is it to set up a filterking and standard carb? The car still needs to be mot'd, but I'm hoping that can be done on Friday and then taxed the same day.

Option 3 would be to put on a trailer and take it to the forum, but what would the point of that be!!:D

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Darren

I'd say #3- no point in doing work twice or trying to rush things, and some other people might like to see your car, running or not. I know I would. They will understand- especially ownrers of OUR cars! Besides, many show cars live on trailers and are rarely driven anyway, so I don't think anyone will deride you for having to push it into line.

Very valid points Will - although I heard today that my towing vehicle will be France this weekend so it's not an option any more! Ah well, still can't make up my mind - the overriding thought at the moment is that I spent so much time and effort to get this far, and it's flippin' annoying to fall at the final hurdle. I guess swapping out carbs will be good practice though eh??:)

You have put so much effort in to getting there on Saturday by one means or another.
If you feel you can do the swap OK then go for it.
I agreed with Will that option 3 was not going to lose you 'brownie' points but with the trailer gone....
I look forward to seeing you there.
Tom

PS Mr Millett arrived on my doorstep earlier wanting to know why the engine swap was not underway. So I have pressure too. Not only 'her indoors' but also 'him down the road' as well!!

Hi Tom,

It's alright for those Flash Harries who have their cars on the road already and only need a bit of polish to get ready! :D:D Happy to help with your transplant if I'm free, and think I'm going to get the practice in and go for the change! I wouldn't have anything to di of an evening otherwise!!

See you on Saturday!

I am very sure your good lady would certainly find things for you to do in the evening.

Tom, If you don't nag you don't get!! Darren, if it was just a polish it needed that would be fantastic! I'm still touch and go for arriving in the monte for the weekend in oxford what with setting fuel tables, spart tables & cruise issues! but fingers crossed x it should be there!

It sounded good when it left my home. I do believe he just likes to 'play' with his computer on like in Formula 1.
Boom boom!

Soz mate, thought you had all that sorted! Or is Tom right and you like playing with laptops!!!

Well, the car is now back to a single carb setup. Isn't it always the way that one thing takes the time! This time it was the bolt by No.2 inlet, just behind the crankcase vent - what a complete B*stard to get in!!!! Not looking forward to getting that one out again!! More or less finished. Just need to re-set the dizzy timing and I'm there. Still got to sort out the fuel pressure, but will try and start it again tomorrow and see where we are.

I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow - hopefully I'll be able to get a bit done during the day, and a step closer to an MOT!

Cheers

If you haven't figured this out already, you'll find that these bolts are much easier to install/remove if you use a 1/4 inch drive socket and extension rather than the normal 3/8 inch drive tools.

Congrats on the progress. Just don't get to thinking you're acually "done" with it.

Hi DJ,

There was no way that any drive was going to fit in there at all - the crankcase breather is in the way - I ended up using a cut down 13mm ring spanner and I have the red and bruised hands to prove it! Going to be a sod to get out again too! The other side was not a problem with the aforementioned ¼" drive.

Thanks for the comments - I know that these cars are never finished - especially mine! ;o) Still got a very long list of things that need to be done and a longer list of things that I want to do! :D
