View Full Version : Euro rear bumper: need prep for heat???

Hey All,
I hope to "dry fitting" my euro bumpers this Sunday, weather providing. I’m a little concerned about heat from the muffler attacking/distorting/melting the inside fiberglass surfaces of the rear bumper.
1) Should I be concerned?
2) If yes to #1, what do I want to add for protection, a self-stick foil or some other heat resistant material? What have other euro bumper folks done, if anything?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi John,
The original cars had a very heavy piece of angle that sat above the rear silencer box and below the rear shelf on the horizontal, with the vertical part running btween the silencer box and the bumper. There is a line of holes along the lower edge. I've got one in the shed and I can take some shots of it if you like?
I have a fibreglass bumper to fit, and I am not going to be putting that heavy water trap back - I'm going to put a lighter water trap in there instead! I intend using heatshield cloth, bonded to the bumper and attached in some way to the internal bodywork. I'm not sure I'd rely on self stick stuff and would use a backup strip or something.
Good luck anyway and keep us posted.
Cheers

A somewhat better description for a Scorpion is that it had an insulated aluminum box liner for the space constructed like the aluminum heat shield that Scorpion had on top of the rear shelf.
They're only heavy if they are full of water!
Mine is in place because the Croft exhaust mounts too close to the valance and definitely overheats it if you don't have the shield. It also fills the area a bit and hides the muffler from view at the rear.

I still have the insulation box in place so I'm good that way. I was thinking of adding something to the bumper itself in addition to the stock box.
