I imagine there are others who have tried this trick but . .
If you want to replace the lock cylinder in your gas cap
the cylinder inside the hood/bonnet latch/handle has the
same tab on the end to actuate the sliding bar in the gas
cap bottom. It's a pain to do but these caps have a habit
of disappearing. Last Alfa GTV-6 cap I saw on E-Bay [only
other one that will fit] went for $110 from Germany. It's
still a fragile mechanism, the plastic lock cylinder surround,
but it does work. I'm getting a new TMH hood latch anyway
so I thought I'd give it a try. Worked, for now.

Maybe a little easier to find if you are really in need of one: a Beta Coupe/HPE gascap will fit too, although not as nicely as an original cap. As it is smaller, you can look between the cap and the bodycutout. I solved this with a black rainwater pipe that fits exactly in the cutout. Not original but nobody will notice it.

I know but I hate the appearance of that MUCH more shallow
Beta/Beta cap. I was making reference more to a lock solution
for the factory cap than an alternative gas cap which would fit.
Just another of my B.S. posts, thought it might help someone.

No BS, tips are always good! :-)

Btw, if you don't have a spare cylinder, you can also "operate" one that belongs to another key and take the little springs and pinns out. You can try to relocate a few and have it working for your key. Quite a pain to get it back together and working though.

Good tip, David- how about the glove box lock cylinder it it the same again? Do you think some of those small cylinders may be interchangeable with the small cylinders used for mailbox locks?

IAP used to sell the GTV caps, you could get one for about 25 bucks. I dunno about today.
