View Full Version : Lucia's first public outing

This past Sunday, Lucia (Scorpion 1288) finally made her first public appearance. It was at a large, but informal European car meet held near my home. We only learned about the meet because of my affiliation with the local Volvo club. As there have been no other events in the Denver area yet this year I figured it was time for her to get out in the sunshine for at least a little while.
It was a rather interesting afternoon and Lucia was an instant attraction as soon as I pulled into the lot. A crowd immediately formed around her and it stayed that way most of the time we were there. I think I may have done more yesterday to educate people about Lancias than at any other event I've ever attended.
There were even people posing their kids next to her to take their picture!
The meet was full of Audis, BMWs and LOTS of VWs. There were about 20 or so Volvos that showed up and most of them were S60Rs and V70Rs (like my wife's wagon). The only other car of obvious Italian heritage was our friend's Volvo Bertone.
I've posted a few pictures here (http://lancisti.net/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=859&ppuser=0).

Thanks, Ed. I really need to start taking my good digital SLR to these things, though, instead of my little pocket cam. I'm never really satisfied with my snapshots like these but it probably more a function my composition ability than my camera.

Well, DJ, you know what they say--a good craftsman never blames his tools. Honestly, though, when I go to a show I solve that problem by just taking the point-and-shoot, and then forgetting to take any pictures with it anyway.
But it's pretty obvious even from a single shot that Lucia is seriously sweet, and that you ought to be truly proud of the job you've done with her.

Wow DJ,
You've made a fantastic job of that one - you must be very proud! Love those wheels!

Very nice DJ. Maybe in a yr. or 2 mine will look like
yours. Any reason you swapped the antenna lo-
cation? Buy that white on on E-Bay since you're
done w/Lucia. You're alot closer than me.

Is that pronounced "LOO-cha" or "Loo-SEE-ah" ? Bwahaha !!! ;)
It's nice to see one of our cars out in the daylight.....without somebody pushing it -JOHN!
Looks really good, now do us all a favor and lose that horrific front tag, PLEASE! Sheesh!
How's the FI treating you now, got it all squared away?

Nice work. Seeing the skis in the other pictures I hope you don't plan on using it for jostling in the parking lot on a powder day. Should be a pleasure in the summer. B.

I guess Davidb has missed all thirty eight thousand internet forum threads that start with "How do you pronounce LANCIA?" :)

Congratulations, DJ! She looks awesome, truly awesome! You've done a great job and major kudos to you for your endurance in seeing the old girl through and keeping on the side of "classy" in all your choices. I especially love the "A rare moment alone" shot.
Now, I just need to emulate your persistence.

Will,
Non rompe. You are kidding, right? You've got Lancia right, with two syllables, accent on the first, and the 'i' compounded with the 'c' as 'ch'. But David's correct: Lucia has three syllables and stresses the second, with the 'ci' pronounced as 'chee'.

Thanks to all for the kind words.
FWIW, Lucia was named by my wife in honor of a lovely young Italian lady who was the restaurant manager in the hotel we stayed at with the Montecarlo Consortium folks during the Lancia Centenary in Torino in 2006. She took exceptional care of us Brits and Americans while we were there and happily put up with all of our quirks, demands, and silly humor. She had spent over a year living in the UK learning English so that she could realize her dream to live and work in the USA someday. Still not clear on why she went to the UK to learn English, though. :D
She pronounced her name "Loo CHEE a" so that's how we say it.
As for Lancia, the Italians in Italy all said "LAAAN sha" with a "short" "A" sound. Not a "LAAHN" or "LAWN" but like LAN as in "Local Area Network".
I promise to post more and better pictures of her soon. I plan to do a "photo shoot" sometime soon with some better background scenery.

No worries. The ski rack photos were really just a gag because I happen to have the NOS ski-rack. She won't be going out in any sort of conditions that would put her at risk (or get her dirty).

Gotta have the tag to be road legal here so I put up with it.
The FI is running great now that I've figured it all out. It's really incredibly simple. You just have to get past some old "carb concepts" and pay attention to the documentation.
Now if my tranny will just quiet down a bit as it gets more use with a PROPER amount of lubricant in it...
Hope to have the VX box in hand fairly soon so I can get it installed.
Also want to replace the steering rack and tie-rod ends with the new ones I have and find a nice rear interior trim panel that's not warped. Then she'll be about as "done" as I'm going to make her for now.

Yep, just as I was trying to say (not well, obviously). I've never heard any Italian pronounce either name any other way.

Agreed . 1ST response from the unitiated is a what [Lancia] ?
I repeat Lancia [pronounced properly]. At least here in Mo.
the hoosier mechanic ALWAYS replys "A LANE-key-a ?"
I drop the lesson in pronunciation.

She looks very nice DJ. It is going to be a great summer!
Looking trough your other photos, I noticed a button or something just below the enginebay lightswitch. What is it exactly?
