Hi Guys,

Just bringing you guys up to date with progress to date. I managed to get virtually the whole of Saturday in the garage and a couple of hours out this this afternoon. I had intended to get the wriring sorted, and I kinda did, or at least prepared most of the periferal stuff, such as the rear lights and side repeaters. Got the centre console sited and started to lay the soundproofing on the firewall. Pics in my folder (Darren) and in 'rear light conversion' & 'progress' but a quick taster for you below.

Comments welcome and thanks for looking!

Cheers

Darren

Well, another weekend with some work done, but no pics as yet. Will maybe get out there again during the week to take some pics. The firewall is now covered with sound deadening and fuseboxes are connected again. Car is running again!! ;o) I now have to move on to sorting out the electrical gremlins. Ok, the list is as follows

1. Indicators - work on the hazard switch, but not on the stalk switch.
2. Headlights & Tail lights - all appear to be ok, but not sure of the switching - centre seems to be off, up for side lights only, down for full headlights - off/dip/Main beam & Flash working fine on stalk switch
3. o/side windows works fine - n/side not working, but can hear relays working, so looks like I'll be taking the motor out to check it.
4. Windscreen wipers & washers not working at all.
5. Horn works but button needs to be sorted.
6. Only lights on dashboard working are the generator and fuel light ( tank is empty ) All other bulbs not working
7. Heater matrix - untested
8. Heated Rear Screen - untested
9. Interior lights - untested
10 Reverse Lights - untested
11. Cooling fans - untested

It's the worst part of the restoration for me - I hate chasing down electrical gremlins! Ah well, I'll get there! - Next update next week, but commnets or advice in the meantime welcome!

Cheers

Next update - not quite as much time as I had hoped, but progress made nonetheless! Sorted some stuff and found more stuff to fix! Ain't that always the way!! ;o)))

1. Indicators - work on the hazard switch, but not on the stalk switch. - No update

2. Headlights & Tail lights - all appear to be ok, but not sure of the switching - centre seems to be off, up for side lights only, down for full headlights - off/dip/Main beam & Flash working fine on stalk switch. - All still ok - checked the diagram and appears to be connected properly. More work needed here

3. o/side windows works fine - n/side not working, but can hear relays working, so looks like I'll be taking the motor out to check it. - It's funny how things don't work when the wires aren't connected! ;o) Doh!!! Took the chance to pull the mechanism, oil it up and put it back. Also got the door lock working again, but the barrel has siezed. Will see if I can free it up with a little soaking. I don't really want to change the locks if I can help it.

4. Windscreen wipers & washers not working at all.

5. Horn works but button needs to be sorted.

6. Only lights on dashboard working are the generator, fuel light & dip beam signla light. ( tank is empty ) All other bulbs not working - All connector plugs have been checked and sprayed with contact cleaner and re-plugged in.

7. Heater matrix - working on full power, but nothing on the first poisiton.

8. Heated Rear Screen - untested

9. Interior lights - working!

10 Reverse Lights - working!

11. Cooling fans - untested

12. Windscreen Washer - not working

13. Dial Lights - Not working

That should keep me busy for a bit!;o)

Next update soon

Hi Darren,
Just had a look through all your photos for the first time. I'm impressed with the amount of work you're putting into it. Rear light conversion is a very neat idea. I was quite shocked by the pic of the car on its side! How did you manage to do that? I've heard stories of floor and chassis restorations done like this but it looks frightening! I know you can get the rollers and chassis tilters but I can't see one in the pic so I'm guessing you just rolled it onto its side?!

Andrew.

Hi there Andrew - How are you?

Thanks for the comments and compliments! Getting the car onto it's side was not as much of a problem as it looks and I just got fed up with lying underneath it trying to get the underseal off!!;o)) All you need is a sturdy wall and a few tyres. Take one empty shell - place a fair distance from the wall. Place tyres on the floor along the side of the car and lift the sills onto said tyres. Then simply lift the shell up - can be done on your own, but definitely easier with two! If you have a brick wall, then use a blanket or foam to protect the roof. Sorted! ;o)

Hi Darren,
I'm fine mate! I've finally cleared away all my other car projects so I've just got my garage to paint and then its VX Monte here we come!!

Rolling your car- you say "empty shell". Did you still have wings on it? I'd be scared about crushing them!

I'm actually thinking about getting my shell dipped, ala www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk . It looks AMAZING. All in nearly 2grand though. Hmmm, 100% rustfree is tempting as a starting point though.

Opel Kadett lights eh? Now there's an idea.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew, glad to hear it!

I have a garage that's falling down, but consent to build a new one. Just need the time amd money to do it!! One day!!!

Yep, wings were on the car at the time. If you place the tyres at the A & B posts, that wil minimise any probs and the main support is actually more on the sills, so as long as they're ok, you should be fine. I certainly had no probs with it.

If I were working on the car again I would go for a rotissery arrangement, but only as you can build the car up that way. I only rolled the car on it's side to clean off the underseal prior to sending the shell off to be sandblasted and etch primed.

I've got another car in the garage too, which already has a vx fitted - long story - I ended up with the whole car rather than just the engine! If I restore that one, I would definately consider dipping it, just to know for sure that it was 100% rust free. Still, 2k is a lot though! Good luck!!

Where are you based? EDIT: I can see you're up in the lakes - bit of a trek for me from Newbury, but if you're ever in the area, you're welcome to pop in or I'll no doubt run into you sometime at a Consortium event. Are you going to Le Mans?

Hi Darren
I'm following your rebuild with great interest.I have a Monte which I started restoring in the early 90s,Bodywork is all done many new panels welded in,just needs fitting up now and painting.House moves and work has meant nothing much done for a good number of years, hopefully this year will make a start so keep those pics coming they are a handy reference where things go,after all these years I have forgotten a lot.If you have a pic of the bottom rad mount it would be a big help, for the life of me I cannot see how it fits,I think I must be missing a couple of brackets.

Also watching Tom's rebuild.

Hi John, Thanks for the comments and I know exactly what you mean! I've been restoring mine for the last 14 to 16 years on and off! Finally got meself organised and booked to go to Le Mans so it's got to be done this year!

Feel free to mail me if you have any questions or need any reference shots at all. I'll see if I can get out and take a pic for you. Or drop me a pm and I'll spend you diagram!

Darren, Yes a bit of a trek from my house to yours! Still, might make an ideal trip once I'm finished so who knows..!? I've had a reckon-up cost wise and for me to do what I want to my Monte- wide arches and big wheels/tyres there is no way my budget will stretch to an acid dip as well so it looks like I'll be scraping for a few weeks:-(... I don't think (ha ha ha ha haaaaarrrr!!!!!) that my Monte is all that rusty underneath so here's hoping I won't regret not dipping it.

Your other car with the VX- is that a Monte too?

Andrew.

Darren
12th March 2008, 02:46 AM
Hi Andrew, Happy to see you whenever. The dipping does add a large amount to a budget even though it means that you start with a clean shell. If you've got the room, strip everything out and start with a bare shell - do your scraping and fongers crossed it's no too bad under there - have fun getting the underseal off!

Look forward to seeing your progress shots!

Yes, the Vx is another Monte - not too sure on the history and who did the conversion, but I got from Steve Lyons who bought it from Nick Warren - before then I have no idea. Wasn't planning to get another car, but it came with the engine & gearbox!;o)

Agree with John that, in this age of digital, photographs are a great boon to be able to see more than the service manual shows!
May I suggest, John, that you look at the parts manual as I think the arrangement of fixing of the radiator is clearly shown. Depends whether you still have all the bits to compare though!!??

Latest step from the weekend - not much actually as felt like poo!:p I have at least sorted out the passenger side door lock, so I now have 2 locking doors! Rebuilt window mechanism is back in again and ready to be fixed properly. Soundproofing is more or less complete and I rebuilt the wiper motor, so I know that works, and we're back to sorting out the wiring!!

Final part was refitting seatbelts and rear quarterlight covers and courtesy lights. Bank holiday weekend coming up and I feel a bit better so hopefully a bit more progress to follow!

Darren,
The S2 Spyder stays standard. Only mod has been uprated headlight bulbs and TMH relay system. It had a standard reconditioned radiator, only 1 fan.
The Project S1 will have the ali rad plus 2 fans. All in good time!!

Another quick update. Only managed to get out to the garage Saturday afternoon and a bit of Sunday as had some other jobs to do outside with the lovely weather we had. Anyway, certainly getting there on the electrical side of things now I think and will soon be able to concentrate on checking over the other engine before swapping it out. Final finishing and MOT. Fingers crossed definitely on course for Le Mans!!;o)

1. Indicators - sorted!

2. Headlights & Tail lights - same situation on the switching but not touched tbh.

3. N/side door, window winder and lock sorted - just need to do the same job on the o/side just for completedness. Maybe get that down this week.

4. Windscreen wipers & washers - sorted.

5. Horn works but button needs to be sorted.

6. Big change here - all dashlights now working, with the exception of the Generator light and also the parking brake flasher! I know the bulb is ok, but need to check the contacts and other wiring.

7. Heater matrix - working on full power, but nothing on the first poisiton.

8. Heated Rear Screen - working

9. Interior lights - working!

10 Reverse Lights - working!

11. Cooling fans - In the process of making new loom for the cooling fans with a relay for each, which resulted in changing the fuse arrangement in the battery box. More pics in my Lancisti folder

13. Fog Light - working

So, just need to finish off the fans, get the headlights working on the correct switch position, and make sure the charging circuit is working and I can get back to the dirty working again! Here's hoping the weather's good for a bit ready for the engine swap!

Next update soon

Hi Tom,

Thanks - and yes, really feel like progress is being made. Actually finished the dual fan wiring to my satisfaction and got all of the front compartment sorted, and now moved onto trying to get the front bumper I have to fit properly. Once that's done then I'll be back to engine building. More pics to follow shortly.

Well folks, a quick late update this time to bring you up to speed prior to this weekend's enterntainment! I made some pretty good progress since the last update. Front bumper is now on, but will be taken off again to prepare it for spraying. I also got my new rear bumper, but there is work required to get it sorted and ready to permanently go on the car. I think i'll go with a standard unit for now, just to get the car through it's MOT.

Ok first thing's first - A big thank you to Lynn my very understanding and long suffering wife to give me the time to spend virtually a while weekend under and over the cars, with few breaks. And, even moreso for arranging those babysitting moments at times when GP qualli and races were on - what can I say, I'm a lucky man!

The plan for the weekend was to get the 3 engines I have into the right places. The starting point was a Vx engine in the new car, which needs to be removed ready for stripping and rebuilding. The attached gearbox also needs checking to confirm that it is also a Vx unit so it can be checked, cleaned and mated to the newly rebuilt engine. That job will be for another time.

The original engine that was in my car was built about 10 years ago and has never been run. Given that it has new pistons, rings, bearings and everything else, I thought it best to strip it, clean where necessary before rebuilding it again. It also gave me the chance to give Guy Croft's oil pump driveshaft modification a go. Pictures are in my folder, but to cut a long story slightly shorter - the engine was in surprisingly good shape with virtually no rust, other than a bit of surface rust in one of the bores. I cut the lobe off the end of the driveshaft, drilled out the hole and retapped a thread for the grubscrew. That went without a hitch, other than a quick search for an allenkey that fit the grubscrew!! Thanks go to Guy for talking me through the process and assuring me that it was within my capabilities!

The engine was more or less ready to be refitted to the car, with the exception of fitting the timing belt, ancilliaries and gearbox, which would be left until the car was ready to accept the engine.

The current engine that was in the car was built to go into the Vx car as the last owner wanted to put the car back as original spec. As it happens, I ended up with the car as well as the Vx engine and box, so I am in the fortunate position of having a spare if either other engine decide to lunch themselves! This engine has been started and run without a problem, so I know it's a good backup unit.

So plan for the weekend is to get Vx out of one car, spare out of the other and into the car that had the Vx unit, and then put the newly rebuilt engine in the original car! Confused? I was and knowing me, it was highly likely that I'd end up with the Vx engine in the original car and the spare in the kitchen!!!! The forecast was for good weather on Saturday, but rain on Sunday - not good for outdoor working! My last gazebo gave its life to a french storm last year, so a replacement was called for, and I was sparing no expense - this one has sides as well!!

I thought I'd tackle the Vx unit first as it looked to be the most complicated to remove. I had noticed that this one different to other transplants in that it had retained the Beta driveshaft arrangement. It was only once the unit had been removed that you could see the modification of the engine mount. It does look as though the rest of the conversion is standard (ie the gear selector and speedo drive) with the retention of the original gear casing. Or at least I hope so and I've not got a Monte box with Beta driveshafts!

Here's where I started

http://lancisti.net/photopost/data/531/thumbs/DSC000192.JPG (http://lancisti.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6910)

And like the excited child I was up and at 'em early on Saturday morning, armed with mug of coffee and iPod set to 'Play All'! The first thing to do was to get the blower off the engine so it could be taken out. I didn't want to risk either damaging the blower or the body work trying the get the whole out in one, although I assume it is possible! By lunchtime I had the unit out and on the floor, with an increasing pile of bits around the place! I did notice that the alternator on the Vx engine had been swapped for a bosch item - are these standard on the Vx or is it a known upgrade?

Babysitting duties intervened at this point, along with GP qualifying, which gave me a chance to have a bit of sit down and a sarnie!

With the Vx unit out, I turned my attention to getting the spare engine out of my car. This happily went without a hitch, and I removed some of the anciliaries before dragging the unit over to the Vx car. Installation of this unit into the car was straightforward, painless and relatively quick, especially as only the mounts were required and not the rest of the plumbing. The engine had ports and carb plugged before being covered, and the car was then pushed back into the garage. At this point it was starting to get dark, so after a tidy up and both cars safely back inside their garages, I called it a day.

http://lancisti.net/photopost/data/531/thumbs/DSC000101.JPG (http://lancisti.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6908)

Sunday dawned dry and not as bright as Saturday, so I took Lynn's suggestion to put the gazebo up before starting work! Wise words indeed as it turned out! Next job on the list was to prepare the engine bay for the new engine. I wanted to move a few things and also tidy up while I had the chance, and so the fuel pump was moved from the crossmember to the more traditional place of the firewall, and the filterking was moved to place where it can easily be adjusted if required. I then found out that cheap Tesco plastic gazebos are at least waterproof, whilst slightly more expensive ones from Argos are showerproof only!!! A quick fitting of the sides prevented rain from being blown in, and also bridged the gap between the garage and the gazebo, allowing me to direct where the water was to fall. As long a I didn't touch cloth (ooh err!!) the water stayed on the outside, or at least when it did come through, it ran down the roof and dripped off at the sides!

I also moved the starter relay to a place where it could also be changed if required. A quick alteration to the coverplate for the additional capilaries for oil temp, pressure and water temp where they exited the central tunnel and I could then move to completing the engine work. The GP proper intervened at this point, which happened to coincide with Lynn's trip to the local retail park and once again gave me a chance to chuck some food down me throat and have a bit of a chill.

The engine and box were finally ready for fitting about 5pm, and fortunately they slotted in without a problem. I just had enough time to tidy up, take down the gazebo and put everything away before the rain returned!

http://lancisti.net/photopost/data/531/thumbs/DSC00053.JPG (http://lancisti.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6920)

http://lancisti.net/photopost/data/531/thumbs/DSC00054.JPG (http://lancisti.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6921)

Overall a long but ultimately productive weekend. Hopefully I'll get the rest of the plumbing finished off during the week, with a view to getting the car running again next weekend. That leaves me a week to get the car MOT'd and test run before trying the trip to the Tech Forum on the 10th! It's going to be close, and I'll probably be there in a bit of an odd looking car, but I should be there in a Monte!!!

Thanks for reading such a long post, and if you haven't lost the will to live, you can see more pictures in my folder under progress and Vx Monte.

As ever, comments welcomed

Hi Pieter,

There are 3 exhausts there! The manifolds to the right are obviously not standard. The wrapped one is a CSC, I'm not sure about the other one. It is a 4-2-1 system.

The back boxes are, from top to bottom - don't know - it was on the vx car with the other 4-2-1 manifold, a standard box, and the bottom one is a stainless one, made by PD Gough. It does look nice doesn't it?! I hope to be fitting that tonight or tomorrow!

The twin endpipe looks really nice indeed, I would also use that one. I currently have an Ansa, but the four tail pipes are a little over the top imho.

Good luck with all the work!

Thanks for the encouragement! I hope to have her running again at the weekend and will post up pics too. May even try a bit of video!;o) I managed to get the airbox fitted, but it is tight to say the least!

I like the twin exhaust look too - I think it would be overkill will 4 that size. Will see how it sounds and performs!

Another step closer to be being on the road - so near and yet......

Good progress made over the weekend and continued where I left off last weekend. I decided to go with the standard rear bumper for now as I don't have the time to get it ready for the Tech Forum next weekend. I have fitted speed bleeders to the calipers and filling the brake system with fluid and then bleeding it was a breeze with an easibleeder! I wish I could say the same about the clutch! I managed to get all the air out of it, or at least I think I did! The pedal just feels as though it's not doing anything, but the arm does appear to be moving a bit. I need to do a bit more I think and adjust it up. If it is correct, then I have a very, very light pedal! Once the brakes were bled, I fitted the new wheels! I love them, but I think the car needsto settle, 'cos they look a bit small to me!

http://lancisti.net/photopost/data/531/thumbs/DSC000174.JPG (http://lancisti.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6947)

The only problem then was moving the car with the brakes on! With the help of Lynn, I managed to get the car back in the garage!!

Engine in, fluids added and after then on to trying to start. First I had to remove the fuel pressure guage as it was pi$$ing petrol all over the place!! So much for that idea to get the filterking set up so it was delivering the right pressure!! Plugs out and engine spun up to bring the oil pressure up. Good news - good pressure, bad news the battery is flagging! So battery on charge and start tackling other little jobs like fitting bonnet vents and bumper vents - fitting number plates, hood straps etc etc.

Finally it was time to try and start the car. After checking there was enough fuel, I tried starting and after a little hesitation, she fired up! But, keeping it running was a trciky exercise in throttle control. I was running very lumpy, which I can only put down to poor/over fueling and carbs that are not set up properly. I also didn't want to rev the car too much as it's new. I had hoped to be able to get the car running to a point where it could be driven to it's MOT and maybe tuned there, but I think it's going to need setting up properly before heading to the MOT. Now it's going to be a bit of a race this week to try and get the car set up and mot'd ready for next weekend.

The other thing the I need to sort is the when the car was being revved, the generator light was on and going off at low revs? Any ideas?? Still in the meantime at least is looking nearly finished!

I wish I could say the same about the clutch! I managed to get all the air out of it, or at least I think I did!

Why didn't you put a SpeedBleeder there too? They work great on the clutch too!

Yeah, right! Do you have any idea how many times I've said that? ;)

Thanks Tom - the list is at least getting shorter - for now!

I just want to get to the point where I can enjoy the car while I finish off the other bits!

See you next weekend.

Cheers

- I think I will put one there - at least I can get them at the MH now without having to wait for shipping from your side of the pond! ;o))

- :D Maybe I should have qualified that statement a bit more by saying that it only related to getting the car road legal, not actually finished! That list is a helluva lot longer!! As long as I can get the bodywork all the right colour rady for Le Mans I'll be happy - as well as a reliable engine of course!! ;o))

Cheers
