How many teeth should a standard VX Supercharger belt have? I've replaced mine with one the same as it came fitted with, but it seems a bit too long although the tensioner still holds it on! :?

From what I've just found out there may be more than one configuration of belt, see the last few post here http://www.lancisti.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=61#4151
Mine's one the car and wouldn't be easy to measure or count the teeth on, but I would be interested to hear if your belt config is the same as mine.

Hi there,
I have always used a Gates powergrip part number 5079 and they should have 126 teeth. Hope this is of some use. :wink:

Hi Steve & Fingers,
Thanks for the input - of 111 who viewed this topic you were the only 2 brave/interested enough to reply! :roll: Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you.
My car has a Goodyear ram belt Part No. 25T127 made here in South Africa fitted. As you can see from the numbers it has 127 teeth. No wonder it's a bit loose...

One thing to be aware of on toothed belts. For the early Volumex belts that have a trapezoidal shaped tooth there are automotive style belts and there are industrial style belts. The industrial belts are classified as 3/8 pitch while the automotive style are actually classified as 9.5 mm pitch. Well 9.5 mm is 3/8 the difference in the belts lies in the section thickness. The automotive style is thicker than the industrial style. The industrial style will physically fit on the automotive style pulleys but the teeth on the belt will wear quickly. An automotive style belt will not wrap completely around a industrial style pulley. Yea I know it sounds crazy but it is true. The later Volumex's used a half round shaped toothed belt system which is totally different.

I knew there must've been a difference in early and late belts, I bought a pulley for my supercharger from Evocars to speed it up and the teeth are completely different to what I have and there's no way it'll fit, I have the rounded teeth. I asked evocars about it and they said they'd never seen anything but the trapezoidal shape. So if I can find the crank and power steering pulleys off an earlier VX I can get it all going, fantastic!! Just failed my six monthly roadwothiness inspection, called a warrent of fitness down here, cracked head light and windscreen, bugger. At least they can be fixed.

Hi Tom,
Very interesting about the industrial and automotive belts.
I must remember not to use my wife's stockings next time mine breaks! :lol: :oops:

Fingers;
I think your pulley is a HTD pulley (High Torque Drive). In a 1" bore (can't remember what the Volumex is- taper arrangement if I recall correctly)
You can get 18-23, 25,33 tooth pulleys from Peterson, pitch is 8mm, confirm against yours.
If it is a smaller pitch, it may be what is referred to as "Gilmer 250" which,I think, is 1/4" pitch (250 meaning .250 inches- not sure) but more likely the metric HTD I would guess. Hope this is helpful.
